Could Canada's Group Draw Derail Their Olympic Aspirations?

Very interesting draw for Canada in Sochi:
-Finland
-Norway
-Austria

Here is how it could potentially effect them during the games:

The article's wrong where it mentions Russia in 2010. Russia was in the toughest group & had lost a game in the preliminary round.

I see this group as a problem. Playing Norway and Austria can mask issues with goaltending or chemistry that would otherwise be addressed.

It could very well turn out that way. Does Canada ever make it easy on themselves? Who knows though, right? At this years WJHC we were in the tough group, Russia and the U.S. managed the prelims in great shape and were ill prepared for the medal round. That was on the coaching staff; somehow I think Babcock and Hitch will have them better prepared than the amateur Spott. But again, who knows with these fickle professionals.

Finland are an elite team.

Austria is a lot worse than Switzerland was, but it's hardly going to be a major difference from Vancouver where they had a group of the US, Norway and Switzerland.

Yup... I see it as a negative, as well. I would rather have Russia, the U.S. and Sweden in our pool. Get a strong perspective on the team before there is no turning back.

You sure you'd want that? Given the way Canada historically starts these Olympic tournaments, we wouldn't even make the playoff round...

You have a point. Having said that, the weakness of the pool is a liability.
