I was exaggerating slightly to avoid dropping undrafted names and to make a point.

Not necessarily having a designated player just barrel down the ice with it and hope he can make it to the promised land, or no hail mary passes to players waiting at the red line. That wasn't really in the game plan as far as I can tell for the Isles.

Maybe someone that lived through the Isles dynasty (which I always say, there's never enough support for that Isles dynasty on HoH - tons of Wings and Habs and Bruins homers, but no Isles homers to prop up some of their players, it's a shame in this context) could correct me if I'm wrong. But the tactics employed by the successful Islanders teams didn't really utilize team speed all that much...in fact, I would suggest that it would slow speed down, especially in transition behind center.
This. Bure wasn't an egomaniac, but he was a free-spirit and would do his best work playing in almost anything other than what Mike is describing.

I honestly see no reason why Bure couldn't succeed where Bossy could. Also, Arbor's teams evolved depending on personnel, and if speed demon like Lafontaine could work with him...

Why do you say that?

Bossy was a classic up-and-down winger who stayed in his lane most of the time.
Bure was a loose cannon, a rocket shot in every which direction, often caught out of position, more creative, opportunistic, more indulgent, less responsible, nose to the grindstone.

Yeah, the Bure-Bossy comparison by Arcand was a little puzzling to me as well.

OK remind me to never draft Hull and Bure again. Apparently they can't work with any linemates or coaches, and are both retards who wander around the ice randomly and never pass.

Sigh.

Strange then how successful they were, isn't it?

Some of the ATD truisms are becoming pedantic.

My two cents on Arbour (who I greatly admire):

Arbour showed very decisively in '93 that he could adapt a game plan around the personnel available and beat a much more talented team in the process.

Who is to say he wouldn't create a system around streaking players like Hull and Bure to force the opposition to keep their defense back and remove their support from opposing forwards in the zone... I think I would bet on that a lot more heavily than Al Arbour throwing up his hands in frustration due to the hand he was dealt.

Well, seeing those are all different players, it isn't that black and white. (Not to mention a lot of the praise for Bossy hinges on the idea that Arbor held back his numbers.)

He was always described as a brainy player who made his line go. The plan for him at third line is to anchor a two-way line. He could stickhandle with the best of them and his line was directed by their coach to keep possession of the puck. If I keep him up front I'm going to try to use his packragging skills with some guys who can capitalize off the chances he creates. It'd definitely be a waste of Colville's game to just build a "shutdown" line. I would have gone in a different direction if I was looking for that elite checker.

List sent to Bring Back Scuderi, night friends. I'll also update the OP tomorrow morning before going to work if no one does so overnight.

I've drafted the Krauts more than once, and I can say that Milt Schmist is a far superior player to Woodrow Dumart, who's a better player than Bobby Bauer. I think Dumart in the Top-200 is a little too high for my taste. There's shouldn't be more than 100 picks between Dumart and Bauer, but Schmist definitely deserve top-2 round selection.

Vancouver selects Vinny Damphousse

The crafty Frenchman will play LW on the second line for us, his superior vision on the ice and playmaking will be welcomed with open arms next to Marty Barry.

I definitely don't think Dumart is a top 200 player on an all-time list, but he gets drafted where he does because he has a fairly unique skill set...a great defensive game, big size, doesn't take a lot of PIMS, and enough of a scoring touch to contribute on a first line (as long as he's the 3rd best offensive player).

And I was just about to take a closer look at his VS2 numbers...

Damphousse kind of flies under the radar, didn't get a lot recognition I thought. Would've been kind of tough given the contemporaries he skated with in his era.

Here's a note: during his career time period he was 13th in points. All but two of those ahead of him are HoFers, (and 1 of the 2 is Jagr). Of those in front of him, only Messier had more PIMs, (by 17 mins), so he wasn't shy of going into the greasy areas.

Good pick up.

I agree. It seems in the ATD, notable negative traits get greatly exaggerated into making players hyper one-dimensional. It seems to me that when great players play with other great players on a consistent player, they become a lot less focused on doing things themselves. Given who Bure played with his entire career, being individualistic isn't really a surprise.

Vinny was a solid playmaker from the LW in his Leafs days for sure.

I was looking at him earlier in the draft but didn't go so far as to see what his numbers were on a vs2 basis.

I know he wasn't that good on a finishes basis. He probably did pretty well compared to other LWers though I'd imagine.

Pick coming shortly
