Alexandre Grenier has another assist for Kalamazoo this afternoon. On the season now he has 4 goals and 19 assists. In his last full year of junior his stat line was 25-39-64, in 64 games. The stat scout report: he's a playmaking winger. The question: is he any good defensively?

Grenier and Mallet both scored in the shootout in the K-Wings win this afternoon. Call 'em up.

(Actually it's interesting that both were even picked for the shootout.)

Goaltending is like Highlander: there can be only be one. (or only one #1)

Defenseman can play in the top 4, anywhere and be fine. Arguably anywhere in the top 6. If the nucks got a top 4 RS Garrison could slide down to 3rd pairing. It's possible one of those NTC dmen demands a trade for some reason, unlikely as it is. It is also possible one gets a career ending injury.

Given the choice between two organisations you like equally well, you take the one with the greater opportunities. An agent that wants to get paid is likely to direct you in that direction as well.

There is Chris Tanev, who you pointed out like its a bad thing to have a former college UFA playing a key role at a young age (despite the Canucks always carrying several high paid defensemen).
There were fewer ntc roadblocks for Tanev, he was also a bit younger which made the AHL route a natural progression.Tanev who is now one of the road blocks.

Also Tanev was a low profile pickup so he likely realised every team would be giving him AHL time to start with. Dave Gagner is IMHO the reason why he chose to come to Vancouver. A bit different from someone with 30 teams submitting offers.

And really, when have the Canucks ever refused to pay any player something close to fair value (considering their bargaining position)? Not in Mike Gillis' tenure that I can recall..
If you do the 2 years in the AHL fair value is what ever minor wages the Canucks just qualified you to, end of story since you have no bargaining power.

I am not saying getting a college Dman is not going to happen, they may feel they can get into the NHL straight away with Canucks but it will be rough as there is only 1 top 6 spot available (replacing Ballard). MG won't carry them in the NHL as a 7/8 and AV won't tolerate rookie mistakes.

The Canucks are a tough sell to top college dmen ufas. I'd be over the moon if we get one, amazing work by Gillis, and a huge leap if faith by the player/agent, especially finding one prepared to risk a year or two in the AHL just to develop their game enough to play for Nucks.

Why do you keep going on about NTC's, it won't have any impact on any college free agent.

Because it is something that College prospects and their agents probably look at when deciding on where to sign

That would be way down the list.

His point is that the Canucks have their D corps nearly set for the next 3 -4 years, and someone signing as a free agent is going to want to have a real shot at getting into the lineup and making some money.

That is why I suggested that if you really want to sign one of these guys, you give him a high AHL salary so going to the minors doesn't hurt so bad.

Canucks have also shown with Ballard that they will be willing to let a highly paid defenseman sit if somebody outperforms them. I don't think NTCs would change that. There's still a spot next to Edler available for someone like Sustr.

Not disagreeing, just supporting the fact that getting into the Canucks lineup may be tougher than other teams since few spots are available. In addition, we have a bunch of guys in the wings.

I don't know - things change pretty rapidly with hockey rosters - it can seem like a team is set, and then trades/acquisitions/departures change everything...

I remember thinking the Canucks were set with a good, young defence in 1998/99 after they traded Bure for Jovanovski with:

Ed Jovanovski (22)
Mattias Ohlund (21)
Bryan McCabe (23)
Adrian Aucoin (25)
Brent Sopel (21)
Murray Baron (31)

What young defenceman would want to sign with that team?

But...
McCabe was traded June 26, 1999 in the 1st round pick/Sedin deal
Aucoin was traded Feb 7, 2001 in the Dan Cloutier deal

And all of a sudden there were openings...

I remember you saying this a couple days ago. If I recall, you suggested giving them a 2-way deal paying them close to half the salary if they are in the AHL.

I like the strategy a lot. But my question is: can you pay guys that much on ELCs?

Justin Schultz is making 3.775 mil while in the NHL (including bonuses) and was making only 70, 000 while in the AHL. This is the same as Yakupov and RNH. Is 70, 000 not the max for a ELC?

There's an ELC max for the AHL, you are correct.

Funny fact: both the Wolves and K-Wings are the most disciplined teams in their respective leagues. Coincidence?

Could you imagine us sucking that bad for one season and scoring someone out of the top 5 this year? I'm not for watching my team suck all year but it sure can help a good team "refresh" their line-up.

Haha with Canuck luck, if we miss the playoffs, we'll end up picking 14th overall. So much for the bright side

It'd put us in the Nurse, Pulock, Mantha, Erne, Gauthier, Wennberg, Morrissey wold of things. Not a bad collection of players.
