video capture software and hardware recomendations

Im currently looking to record sports like nhl and ufc to my laptop. Problem is when ive gone into a few stores to get some help the workers are mentally reignorant and cant give me any advice. I am not sure what to buy but from what ive seen are mostly capture programs designed for gaming capture which is fine as long as it does the job of video.

Also whats a good program for cut commercials out.
