Fair enough, but why the heck doesn't kimmo tell our OWN announcers how to pronounce it....if anyone is going to get it right...I would think it would be our home crew.
I don't think players really mind. I can't think of a single finn with a 100% finnish name, whose name is pronounced correctly in north america. I don't really mind either, as long as I can make out who they are talking about
Second PP unit needs a shakeup. I don't think Gus can QB. I'd like to see what Schenn and Coburn can do collectively on the blue line of a second unit. Both have heavy shots.
More or less the way the Isles guy does it. Whenever there is just one vowel in a finnish name, the vowel sound is always short. So the 'Tim' in Timonen is pronounced just like "Tim", not "Team". So, more or less "Tim-onen", not "Tea-monen". The only thing wrong with the Isles guy's version is the 'o' sound, but it's close enough and would be very difficult to explain.....
uh..must have different dialects then. "i" in Finnish is pronounced like "ee" so from my perspective "tea-monen" IS the correct way, as long as the "tea" is short..not "teee" long.

Does the sound of the letter o in Finnish differ depending on the word or is it just not the same as an English o in general?

Lol, didn't mean to start nothing between Fins. I'm Greek and there are plenty of things that some people pronounce, what I consider incorrectly, and it really bothers me. They're not wrong though. Not sure if its the same or not I'm just saying

Yeah, same thing with Swedes, Czechs etc. Very rarely pronounced close to correct. It's Pierre McGuire who excels at it.

I disagree. He makes a move every now and then.
Who knows what these guys did in the offseason (ie how they trained) without team facilities. He's inconsistent, but hes 20. You can see (at least I do) the potential there with both him and Schenn.

What? Tim is pronounced 100% same in both finnish and english. Tim isn't pronounced like "Taim" in finnish, if that's what you're alluding to. Saying that tea-monen is correct, as long as the "tea" is short makes no sense to an english speaker, because the vowel sound is never short in the word "tea".

Every letter in the finnish alphabet is pronounced the same way, EVERY TIME, no matter whether they start a word, are in the middle of a word, or are at the end of the word. If there are two of the same letter, then you just stretch out the sound. In finnish "Tim" is pronounced like "Tim" in english. "Tiim" in finnish would be pronounced like "Team" in english. The same vowel sound, just stretched out. That's what makes finnish relatively easy, once you've learned the alphabet.
The letter 'o' in finnish is pronounced like the 'o' in most british english words, and the 'o' in Timonen is pretty much the same as the 'o' in Colin. But I mean the british way, not the american "cawl-in".

The Carolina Hurricanes' PxP radio man has a pronunciation guide of sorts that is supposedly as true as possible. He was with the Whalers from their first season, IIRC. Years ago, he worked with Andre Lacroix, who is an original Flyer, and a story goes that Lacroix mentioned that the PxP man "pronounces my name better than me (or something to that effect)."
