Trumbull's John Longo is among those in camp with Bridgeport. The former Fairfield Prep forward played four years at the University of Vermont, where he was a co-captain last year. Another familiar name: forward Sam Ftorek, son of former New York Ranger and New Haven Nighthawk Robbie Ftorek.

Forward Neill Posillico and defenseman Derrick Byfuglien both participated in Islanders rookie camp earlier this month and earned positive reviews from coach Greg Cronin.

Chris Elsberry column: Offseason effort works for Stirling

"I think it was most important. He's a great guy, in my opinion, it's easy to talk to him and he'll listen to what people want to say and make the best decision possible," Yashin said after the Islanders defeated the Boston Bruins 6-2 in an exhibition game Sunday at the Arena at Harbor Yard. "He came to talk to me in Switzerland over the summer and it went very well.

"It's what he tries to do that's most important. We have to support each other and play for each other. If someone makes a mistake, there are four or five guys on the ice to help fix it and I think it's an easy way to play when you have support. It gives you a better confidence and you can play easier, not thinking about making a mistake."

Interesting

No cuts were officially announced but it's clear Stirling made some moves that are going to stick. Maybe one of the Bgpt vets still get that 13th forward spot but need to get their work in with Cronin and come up later.

Not sure what the plan is on Timmander. Maybe this puts him in a position where he can be claimed before a waiver draft or they just want him to get his work it while Butenchon seemed to fit the seventh defender role easier and sit for longer stretches.

Not surprising Hunter, Bergenheim, Papineau and Mapletoft are still here. At least two of them will be sent down.

Yashin had a good early endorsement for Stirling and what he's trying to do, shame the NHL media covering the team does not speak much to Yashin or had the same story.

Bridgeport has a left wing named Gillies in camp? His ECAC site does not reveal if he is related to Clark Gillies but he was the captain of his team.

Timmander was probably sent down because he may be a step behind with his sickness and not practicing for the first couple days. granted, he did play in the Pitt game, but i think the idea is to have more of the BST players play with NHL caliber players...this is Stirling's best shot at seeing how his BST players can play at the next level...

Seems like yashin likes the return to the defensive style system he played with in Ottawa...Probably b/c he will not be singled out for every minor thing, but it may re-emphasize his skill and not dull him out like last year...

On defense, veteran Sven Butenschon has been solid in his own zone and added a goal against Boston on Sunday.

"Boots has been very steady," said Stirling. "I think people up here saw that when he played some games on Long Island.

go "Boots" go
