-Bennett (it's still early but he had a handful of chances and failed on all of them)
-disco for playing Adams and Glass with our big guns
-the Malkin line is useless at even strength. They give up more goals than they score.
-we are pretty much a one-line team right now plus the power play.
+ Sid - Has what feels like a nothing game for him and ends up with three points. Just shows you what kind of talent he is. I don't feel he even played particularly well but he still found a way to make a few key plays.
+ Dupuis - Does not get the love he deserves despite producing and being a tremendous two-way hockey player year in and year out.
+ Fleury- Sure he gave up three but we were not particularly great defensively this game. I thought his rebound control was suspect today but he made some huge game-saving saves so overall he's a plus for me.
- Our gap control and third man high. We gave up a ton of rush chances to Buffalo this game. I know they've got a speedy team but we gave up too many odd man breaks.
- Dumb penalties. The dumb penalties nearly cost us the game. We won but those are the type of things that make you lose in the playoffs where games are tighter and you can't always count on coming back from being down. The bad penalties have to be eliminated from our game as much as possible. Bylsma needs to get on these guys about those.
Told my wife after the Sabres killed the PK when the Pens were up 2-0 that the Pens were going to lose. They just went into mindless zombie cruise control. It's maddening. That said, yay!!! they won!!!
+ Sid - For someone who lost a step, is afraid of contact, and won't drive the net... he sure seems fast and eager to go to all of the dirty areas. Maybe we shouldn't judge his health by how many goals he scores in a game.
+ Martin - I really like PMart. I liked him last year. I didn't want him thrown away. I'm so happy to see him performing this way. I'm happy that he turned it around. I'm happy that he's getting a ton of credit for not running away from adversity. Not only is he more physical this year, the extra muscle seems to have helped his shot. And his promotion to the top PP unit has really helped it out.
+ Dupuis - Most underrated player in the league and by far the best value (based on contract) in the NHL. Plays hard and fast game in and game out. My desire to see him put on the 3rd line has nothing to do with disliking him. The Penguins are a better team with him around.
- Bylsma - Wanted a grittier, bigger D. Sat Despres. I hate his decision making with regards to the roster. It's just bad. Often times, it makes no sense.
- Kunitz - I know you hate Ott, and I know he really sold that penalty, but you can't be retaliating like that in a close game.
+ PK - other than the 5-on-3, which they almost killed, they really shut down the Buffalo PP.
+Martin...been glad that he returned to form, but the strange thing is, he never shot like that the last time he was in form. Just have nothing but good things to say about how he's played this year
+Dupuis...he needed to win about 5 battles to keep the puck in on his goal. Great to see him rewarded for all that work.
-Fleury...the number of rebounds he kicked into the high slot in this one game is about the same as I'd expect from a $5 million goalie in an entire month.
-Sutter...I never thought I'd say this about a Sutter, but this guy needs to start working a lot harder. He's not battling. He's playing like Jan Hrdina out there. "I'm standing in the right place...that's all there is to this sport right? Right?" He should be watching how hard the guys on the Sid line fight for the puck and body position.
Huge plus for Dupuis. We are all aware of his offensive limitations, but I love this guy. Great on the PK, makes safe and simple plays, gets pucks on net and goes to the net, and rarely takes stupid penalties even though he manages to play solid D.
