Notable goalies drafted in the 1st round: Price, Luongo, Rask, Lehtonen, Varlamov, Fleury, Ward.
Notable goalies drafted in the 2rd round or later/undrafted: Quick, Miller, Lundqvist, Rinne, Smith, Bryzgalov, Anderson, Backstrom, Halak, Vokoun, Hiller, Kipprusoff, Howard, Crawford.
Still look like a good idea to draft a goalie in the 1st round? And Rask was traded for Andrew Raycroft straight up, while Lehtonen was traded for a 4th round pick and a prospect.
You don't draft a goalie in the first round because their development is so hard to predict. However, a proven goalie that has already spent years developing is definitely worth a 1st round pick....depending on where the pick is of course.
Varlamov is coming off a 50 save performance and definitely looks like a goalie you can make a run with.
Don't think it would matter much for them, and the return they got for him is considerable.
"It has not been a good day. I lost my glasses early this morning and I had to go buy a pair of 79 dollar reading glasses today. 79 bucks. You can literally get them at Costco, three-for-20." - Darryl Sutter's response to going up 2-0 in the series.
I wouldn't have made the move if I was Washington, so I'll say yes.

Option A was trading Varly for the highest return possible.
Option B was keeping him, and letting him go play in Russia because we couldn't guarantee him the starting job.
In neither option would he be playing for us right now, so obviously taking the option that netted us a nice return (and kept him from dying in the Lokomotiv crash) is still the right choice. That's why Caps fans were so ecstatic about the trade when it happened - everyone knew our backs were against the wall on this one and we'd have to move him to the highest bidder. We were all really surprised to get such a great return under the circumstances.
