Penguins fan here that was at the game yesterday....
I noticed that the Sabres PA guy doesn't put much emotion into his goal announcements. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but just found it odd. For the record, I hate our own PA guy because he acts like its a monster truck rally. But yesterday, the most color he put into any announcement was when he announced Crosby's penalty. I just wondered what Sabres fans thought of him.
Thank God. The normal overly enthusiastic goal announcements for Buffalo make me cringe, as some who grew up with Milt Ellis. Even keeled baritone, for everything.
You and me both.
Personally, if they can get Rod Mawhood(who does the PA duties for the OHL's Niagara IceDogs)to be the PA man for national games, that would work wonders. He does put some zip into his goal calls, but NOT to the extent that Jay does.(Rod has done some fill-in work for the Sabres before, so it wouldn't be new to him.)
For those of you who know me, you know that the PA job at First Niagara Center is my 'career goal' for this hobby of mine. For those of you who don't know me:
I've been working in the event presentation field as a hobby for just about ten years (since I was a sophomore in high school). I started in basketball - then graduated to football, hockey, and even swimming. I've wanted that seat at FNC for as long as I can remember - and I'm starting to put myself in a position to show that I'm an asset to the organization. I'm currently the PA announcer for the 'Future Sabres' youth pre-game hockey games at FNC before the NHL games.
As far as my style - I think I'm somewhat of a hybrid. I try to keep the same tone for everything I call, but for 'home' (in this case Buffalo) goals / intros / etc - I put just a bit more emphasis on it. You won't hear anything obnoxiously long or drawn-out, but there is a little more edge to a Buffalo goal for me.
I could talk forever about my style and how I think I sound, but ultimately you folks are the judge. I hope to see some of you out at my other events (for example, I'll be PA announcer for the Jr. Sabres home finale at FNC on Wednesday, 7 PM).
I can only hope I'm able to give the position the respect it deserves, and that I am judged worthy of such a job by the rest of Hockey Heaven.
