Highly doubt he takes a mil or more paycut, hoping he's stays the same or could see him going down to about 6m which is fair.

the good thing is we have alot of cheap d-men right now and for the near future anyway, Gardiner, Rielly will not be taking up massive cap space, with cheap decent guys like Kostka/Fraser/Franson, even Liles isn't that much(3.8m).

id say 6 years 25 mil. 4.2 per.
in a couple of years we are going to have studs playing top minutes rielly and gardiner and gunnersson, maybe simon depres if the trade is made with pitts for kulimen.
and there contracts are going up to.

Considering he's the captain and is entering his prime, what kind of endorsement is ownership and management sending their captain? That he's regressed since his early 20's? I think he'd get over 6m per on the UFA market anyways...might not be worth bruising his ego over a few hundred grand. I think those who are saying 5m per are undervalueing him by a lot.
Your confusing cap hit, with cash in.

He will be turning 29 during his extension negotiations.

An 8 year term has him finished at 37.

Not hard to front load the cash in the first 3,4 years and grade it down to lower the cap hit as his age and play declines.

I'd let him walk or actively try to move him for a 1st-late 1st if he doesn't accept at most, a 5.75/5 yr contract. Simply put, he's not worth 6+ in today's market anymore and the precedent we set with guys like Grabo are going to kill us moving forward.

Here's how I see it... Dion is currently 27, with 1 more year left at 6.5 mil. His new contract will kick in for the 2014-15 season, when Dion will be 29. If we give him the deal I proposed, which was 8 years $40 million, but front loaded, it breaks down as follows:

Year 1: $7 mil, age 29
Year 2: $6 mil, age 30
Year 3: $6 mil, age 31
Year 4: $5 mil, age 32
Year 5: $4 mil, age 33
Year 6: $4 mil, age 34
Year 7: $4 mil, age 35
Year 8: $4 mil, age 36

For his last year in his 20s, he is actually getting a raise. And for ages 30 and 31, he still makes $6 mil, which is very fair. However, after that the salary begins to go down, as he will inevitably start to decline. This deal essentially takes him close to retirement, while providing him with long term security, big money for his prime years, and fair money for his inevitable decline, all while giving his team a very friendly $5 mil cap hit, allowing his team to get better and have a better chance at winning. This is the best case scenario for both sides IMO.

Coach chooses the Captaincy. Carlyle could have taken it from him, genius.

You definatly know what your talking about. Not sure how much I like 8 years, but with this breakdown it makes sense. I would prefer to see a six year extension, but with this cap hit, which would probably be harder. Nice job!

Carlyle would be pretty stupid to strip the C from Dion the way this team is playing. Keep the leadership roles as is, the team will grow as a group. Keep changing captains and the message is blury.

I think any Leaf fan would be happy to see that.

I think realistically 8,8,7,7,5,5,5,5 (guessing at numbers) but 50 Million over 8 years (6.25) if fair. Pays him till he is 35. Now I am not sure what the contract length rules are but 10-11 year retirement contract would probably be what he wants.

There's just so much fail in this thread...

Anyone who thinks Dion isn't a top defenceman, just look at the minutes he plays and what he provides. Is he perfect? No, but how many Charas or Webers are there in the league? The guy plays 25+ minutes a night in every situation, against the oppositions' best players, and while he doesn't put up consistent points, he has stretches where he is amongst the most productive in the league from the back end.

There is no way, on a deal less than 6 years long, Dion will have a cap hit below 6...The least I could see him accepting is something like 45M/8 years = 5.625/year

Yr1 (29): 7M
Yr2 (30): 7M
Yr3 (31): 6M
Yr4 (32): 6M
Yr5 (33): 5M
Yr6 (34): 5M
Yr7 (35): 5M
Yr8 (36): 4M

Even then, I could see him getting 8M in the first year or 2 and/or 6M in the 5/6th years...

IMO he must take a pay cut to stay with the Leafs.
Dion's pretty good, but not $6.5M good.
