Is Brandon Saad going to win the Calder?

I have to say yes at this point, as least that he deserves it. He is also on fire, so I can see him having a very productive end to the season.

Saad: 41 GP, 9G, 15A, 24 P...+16

Plays ~18:00 min a game in all situations. He is on the best team, but I'm not sure if the helps or hurts him.

Competitors:

Cory Conacher: 40 GP, 10G, 15A, 25P...-1.

Plays ~16:00 min a game. Not sure about his PK or PP time. He's had just one assist since being traded. The lack of production at the end of the season could sour people on him. Still I think he is the biggest competitor.

Jonathan Huberdeau: 41GP, 13G, 14A, 27P...-13.

Plays ~17:00 min a game. It is my opinion that a player on the worst team in the league should not be winning any such award.

Alex Galchenyuk: 42 GP, 7G, 15A, 22P...+9.

Plays ~13:00 min a game. On a good team too. My second biggest competitor to Saad.

I'd like to see him continue racking up points to close things out and I think he will. He needs to beat Huberdeau by at least a few points to lock this thing up.

It's highly unlikely that he passes Huberdeau for points. There's only 6 games left...7 for the panthers. His best chance is that people overvalue the +/- stat, with their being a 29 net difference between the 2.

Most likely no but Huberdeau doesnt play SH and has a little more than 1/3 more pp time than Saad. Saad is the better all around player.

Huberdeau was given the award before the season and then that was solidified after the first 4 weeks. Saad is going to have to beat him by 10 points to get the award.

As some around here have said---and of which I concur---losing out will probably just motivate him more, just like falling in the draft did.

Brodin logging 23 mins a night for a playoff team deserves it imo with Saad a close 2nd

He needs to beat Huberdeau in points to win. Whenever it's between forwards the one with the most points will win 9.5/10 times. Hopefully he can play his way into a nomination at least but it doesn't really matter as long as he remains a productive player for the Hawks.

I wouldn't go that far, the kid is definitely doing more with less and he's 1 point behind Fleischmann for leading the team in points.

Huberdeau is great and if Florida plays their cards right they'll have him and perhaps MacKinnon at C next year.

I think Huberdeau will win - and he deserves it over Saad.

Saad's still had an amazing rookie year, though.

I'm not saying I disagree but wondering what your reasoning is here. As a disclaimer I think JH will win.

Brodin is amazing for a rookie dman. So poised and not at all out of place on top pairing with Suter. Suter's game has also picked up since he has been paired with Brodin.

As much as I would love to see it, I don't see saad beating huberdeau. Huberdeau doesn't play with toews and hossa and still has more points. He is also the main focal point of opposing defensemen. But it's not like it matters all that much to me

I'd love to see it happen, but I highly doubt it.

Naw--you do not want him to win the ROTY --if he did ,no doubt his agent asks for an extra million a year on the 2nd contract--so let FLA overpay ...also their ELC bonus kicks in for more $$$ if they win a ROTY --so you do not want that at all...

+/- is one thing...

being on the ice for 35 goals against compared to Saads 23 Goals against while on the ice is another story

or if you look at the Giveaway/Takeaway Ratio. Huberdeau is negativ by -10 and Saad is positiv with a + 10

that's a lot compared to about 5 points he may have on Saad. Huberdeau would win because of hype

I think Saad at least has to get to double digits in goals.

going with 2 way play, there is no other rookie forward as complete as Saad is this year

Huberdeau is all those Florida fans have to hold onto this year. They won't be convinced. Also, this place always over hypes the top picks. I get the feeling over time since that draft that a lot of people almost want Saad to fail because he was such a late pick. Some people completely dismiss his injury during his draft year and still call him a lazy player that year. Whatever. We have a great player and have known it since day 1. That's all that matters. As HF50 said, a Calder will only cost the team more money. At the same time, he's worked so hard so I do want to see him get it.

He is certainly a contender and I think he stands a good chance.

I also see no idea why Huberdeau should be punished for playing on a last place team. It's an individual award not a team award, a teams record should have nothing to do with a players award.

99 steps said it best in the main thread. It's an advantage to play with great players and it's an advantage to get extra playing time and PP time while being encouraged to shoot more. In the end, it is a wash.

I agree, but to use him playing on a last place team as a way to hurt his chances his ridiculous, it's a player award, no matter what team he is on the award is given to the player who had the best year.
