Nonis says leafs still seeking a veteran goalie

Quote:
"Both our (current) goalies are aware of it, it's not that we don't think that we have NHL-calibre goaltenders, or goalies with the ability to become very good starting goaltenders," Nonis explained. "But if we could add someone to help them along, a veteran that would help them grow, then we would do it."

Someone who will carry their sticks, perhaps?

Probably just doesn't want to say he doesn't have faith in Scrivens... I'm sure Scrivens would go down to the AHL.

Does Scrivens need to clear waivers if he is sent down?

I'd think we carry 3 goalies and the veteran can just help em out in practice and in the room

Pretty sure.

Surprised Nonis came right out with that.

I guess they don't have faith in Rynnas.

I just assume it's more keeping the goalies on their toes. I doubt with the way Reimer and Scrivens have played to this point it's a major objective to bring in a veteran goalie for any reason.

I always liked Biron. He is a very experienced backup, who can shoulder a load if needed.

Let's hope Bowen is right and Reimer is back skating within a week (even though he said couple of days), but I have a fear Reimer might be out long term and this search could be a result of that.

Sooo...kinda what a goalie coach does?

Sounds to me like he's looking for a Scrivens replacement. Let's be honest, we're rolling as a team right now but I still don't have faith in Scrivens long term. But hey, maybe Scrivens can keep up what he's doing right now and gain the GM's trust.

I would bet its a Joey MacDonald type who can move between the minors and the NHL team. I don't think they want Rynnas watching games when an injury comes up.

Wouldn't be shocked to see Nonis reach out to Dwayne Roloson to see if he'd take a one year minimum if Reimer is going to be out longer than his "minimum" of one week.

Rolly may or may not be willing to accept the minimum with the potential of only playing backup for a couple more weeks.

Reimer was set to be out for a "minimum" of one week, but the minimum was stressed.

If Ben Scrivens continues to play well, then we may see the Leafs take their time with James Reimer and let him rest the suggested 3 weeks, and sign someone like Roloson who they can then waive later.

He isn't going to send Scrivens down.

Remember how Reimer always thanked Giguere for helping him learn the ropes and being a pro, mentoring him etc?

He wants the same right now. Not sure if we will get any veteran goalie to sign though if they keep playing so well.

Nonis was asked if his earlier statement about the goalie situation still applies...that is he would like to acquire an "experienced" goalie if the right deal came along, even though he believes his two current goalies are NHL quality. He basically said this was still the case. I would not read too much into this TSN report; no need to look for hidden meanings. Have to believe that he is ecstatic with the play of Reimer and Scrivens so far, and is not in any rush to derail their development. I think he was just saying the politically correct GM doublespeak...not really showing the Leafs hand.

So long as he only starts games at the ACC
