You know, after thinking about a rental, and possible trades,
I think I'd want Chia to look at 1st liner or top end 2nd liner, in
their prime, with 2 or 3 more years left on a good contract.
Look at teams looking to rebuild.
Put this player with Pevs and Kelly.
Use some prospects, and draft picks, and if need be some of the 3rd/4th liners
as trade chips.
I just hate the idea of using the best prospects for a rental.
Most of the time the rental does not pay off. I know Kaberle did pay off,
but he didn't cost much anyway.
One example. I'm sure I could find others if i was worth the time and trouble..
Perverley still had a year to go on his Thrashers contract when he was obtained by the Bruins; he would not have been a UFA until summer 2012. Hence, he was not a "rental." The Bruins re-signed him a year early, as they have a habit of doing (Krejci, Bergeron, Chara all re-signed before their contracts ran out).
Other than Kaberle, "rentals" are guys like Recchi, (who ended up happily turning into a mainstay, which happens occasionally) who went for Matt Lashoff, Martins Karsums and a second-round draft pick. Or if you're looking at plug-ins that can help in case of injury down the stretch/in the playoffs, players like Brian Rolston and Mike Mottau for Yannick Riendeau and Marc Cantin.
