He certainly seems more in control so far this year. He's relying more on positioning and less on athleticism. He's also controlling rebounds better.

He looks head and shoulders above where he has been in the past. He's mechanically sound, he makes the easy and routine saves and he's still making those sick ones too.

I don't think he's been all that better than his start last year. He was great at the beginning of last year too.

The difference is how composed and how much bigger he's making himself look in net.

His higher glove hand and MUCH better rebound control are the biggest differences I see so far. I'm sure there's some little details that Allaire's had him change too, but those two things are what's paying the biggest dividends IMO.

I wonder if it would be impossible to get him to sign a Niemi deal?

4 years at 3.8M per.

Would you guys do it?

Probably. But he hasn't proven that much YET. But at the end of the season, I think it would be impossible to get him to that deal.

On the other hand he hasn't proven anything yet so we sign him to that deal and maybe he never stays consistent and we have 4 million in a goalie that's no good.

That said I'm in love with varly and have been since day one so lock him up.

At least it seems he's straightened out the question marks regarding his ability to stay healthy. Now the question mark is his ability to stay consistently good. We all know how how he can look when he's playing well.

I don't think there is any rush in re-signing him. Let him earn his next contract and then pay him what he's earned, even if it's a big deal.

This is exactly how I see it. Let Varly prove his worth this season, and pay him the money he has earned.

He's on a hot streak and it's good for his confidence. Makes him feel the work and adjustments have paid off. This I think is very important to a young goalie.

Toronto Sun article about Varlamov. It seems Allaire has him working hard.

"After practice, I'm dying every day. But that's how he works.

"Does Patrick help me with my position? It's a tough question. Patrick is the head coach and he is busy with all the other players. I work a lot with Francois and I like it."

Also from that article above. Doesn't sound like Allaire is part time at this point at least.

"Varlamov gives much of the credit to Allaire, who is with him for two hours of instruction on non-game days, with a good pep talk before every start."

I had that exact same thought. Wonder if Allaire goes on the road with them?

Not sure why everyone is so surprised. We've seen these stretches from him in the past. When he's in the zone, he looks bigger, he controls his rebounds better and doesn't let in any soft goals.

For me, the test is how he reacts and adapts when he lets in a bad goal or has a tough start in general.

That's when we'll really start to see if he's a "new goalie".

Having proper goaltender coach certainly helps. He's looked very good so far. It looks like he's way more calm in net this year and he looks bigger as well.

Good? Sure, we all knew he could be a good goalie when he's on his game.

But, what he's doing right now is almost not even Human.

He has a sv% of .970 through 4 games and hasn't even recorded a shutout yet.

Even of the 4 goals he's allowed, a case could easily made that 2 of them shouldn't have counted. The one he gave up in Toronto on the late whistle, and the one against Anaheim with 4 seconds left after questionable hit by Lovejoy.

If he had those 2 goals back right now, He'd be at a .984 sv%.

He's playing at a ridiculous level right now. Unbelievable.

I fully agree , Varly is playing out of his mind right now . I believe we have to give credit to Alllaire for Varly's success ( and Gigučre's success too for that matter ) . We just have to look at Varly, he's always at the right place at the right time for the puck . he's never out of position and always ready for a rebound . what we are seeing right now is the result of Allaire's teaching, he made a few change with our goalies , better position , cuts the angles , facing the shooters , like i said always at the right place at the right time .

Of course , our goalies wont have a goal average of 1 all year long , but it's amazing to see the result of a goalie coach , not only a coach but also a can a teacher of the game will do to your goalies.

Yeah but then he'll be in a Bobovsky type of situation. If the Avs are smart, they'll extend him before the end of the year... before he gets a crazy KHL offer in the off-season. The Avs have Allaire, Roy and Giggy who should all have a pretty good idea how good he can be and how risky it would be to lock him up long term.

Get it done soon, imo.
