If true, another reason why EJ is so awesome.

Probably got tired of Dater ripping on him and the rest of the team.

Varly has the most wins in the league since December 12th with 16.

Next closest is 14.

Also this is Varlamov's first 30 win NHL season. Hopefully the first of many to come as well. Interestingly in Avalanche history I believe only one goalie (Roy) has posted more then one 30 win seasons with the team.

And I know it's a bit early but the last time an Avalanche goalie had a 40 win season was Roy back in 2000-01. Anderson came close with 38 wins in 2009-10. Played 71 games that season, pretty heavy load.

He always plays well against Chicago. Gives me hope if they meet in the playoffs.

At this point, one has to think Varly is a serious threat for the Vezina.

2nd in the league in Wins, Tied for 3rd in the league among goalies with more then 30 games played in Sv%, and 12th in GAA again among goalies with 30+ games played.

The GAA stat is because of all the shots he faces though.

At this point, when you look at Wins and sv%, I think its between Bishop, Varly, Rask, and Price. With Miller having an outside shot depending on how he plays with STL down the stretch.

I'd say if the voting happened today, Bishop gets the Vezina, with Varly and Rask as the fanalists.

Crazy to think Varly also only has 1 shutout on the season. Probably deserving of 4-5 if it werent for unlucky/late goals.

Definitely should be in the running, but you're right Bishop has to be the leading candidate right now.

Bishop - 48GP - 29 wins - 2.07 GAA - .931% - 1360 SA
Varly - 49GP - 31 wins - 2.47 GAA - .925% - 1550 SA
Fleury - 50GP - 32 wins - 2.32 GAA - .916% - 1366 SA
Rask - 45GP - 26 wins - 2.18 GAA - .927% - 1283 SA
Price - 48GP - 26 wins - 2.33 GAA - .925% - 1459 SA

Pretty big discrepancy in shots against though, I wonder how much they value that when deciding. Think that GAA discrepancy's probably too high either way, if it stays about the same.

Too bad they dont take into account the defense that is playing in front of these guys. Varly would shoot up quite a bit.

In that case Varly would #1 and they should take into to account, but I doubt it.

While other goalies have better overall save percentage, the fact that Varlamov owns close games should count for a lot.

http://www.extraskater.com/players/o...ct&sit=5v5tied

or

if you're lazy

Sort of a specific stat with 5v5 tied, but at this point in the season the sample size is pretty substantial. 427 Shots against and just 22 let in. That equates to the other team having to take an astonishing average of 19.4 shots to beat Varly. The next best in Rask is 17.0 shots.

Varly also leads 5-5 with the score within one but only by 0.1%

5-5 save percentage is just probably a fairer way to look at how a goalie is playing, as so many power play goals are totally unstoppable deflections or come on in front of the net passes and say way more about the PK unit than the goalie.

tampa's D is also pretty meh. bishop has been the clear MVP there. though imo varly has been MVP on avs so far.

They may be meh.. but they are way better than the Avs on paper. As much as I like EJ, Hedman is a step better and their top 5 of Hedman, Carle, Gudas (way underrated), Salo, and Brewer completely blows away EJ, Hejda, Barrie..... Guenin, and Benoit/Holden.

not enough to explain the differences in sv% imo. though i don't believe that bad D or good D influences sv% awfully lot. some yes but not very much.

gudas may be underrated generally (don't really follow main board that much) but he is prone to some baffling mistakes. damn tough customer though. would love to have him.

and the difference between bishop and his backup and varly and his backup is pretty huge.

howard also had pretty similar sv% last year on about as bad D and i don't think he had vezina caliber season though he was good.

i don't watch boston or montreal a ton but i'd say price has had comparable season but rask hasn't. that boston D/system definitely seems to influence sv% and limit good scoring chances.

He wins the vezina... I'm bumping up all those varly threads from when the avs got him. Both here and on the main board.

Unbelievable. I have been amazed how good he has become this season. We robbbed Washington for 1st and 2nd. What a great goaltender. He will be our #1 goaltender for many years.

This game puts Varly ahead of Bishop in the Vezina running IMO.

Bishop has crashed big time the past couple of weeks. But at this point, I dont think you can make an argument for anyone but Rask for the Vezina. Running away in sv%, and GAA. Also up there in Wins.

Varly would need to go on a crazy stretch over the last 5-6 games for him to pass Rask. Would need to get the sv% over a .930 I think and finish with 40 Wins.

I doubt Rask faces 30, 40 shots every game. That should be considered when voting for the Vezina

The best thing about Varly is that for the first time in ages I don't have the sense of impending doom every time there is a decent shot fired at the Avs net.

If only Varly could play 82 games a season. I still have that feeling in every game Varly doesn't play

I hate to say it but you aren't wrong. The deal is looking worse and worse for the Caps. The Caps are still pretty high on Holtby, but since his first playoff run with Washington I have had a man crush on Varly

Varlamov is an incredibly talented goaltender, hard to believe he is only 25 (26 soon).

Varly has 6 fewer wins than Holtby has games played this season.
