Sounds like varly is playing lights out in pre season, hope he pulls a bobrovsky and wins the vezina this year and leads the avs to the playoffs. Kid is talented enough, and with roys and allieres help he could be top 5 in the league.

I'm extremely high on him as well. Not sure he's a possible Vezina winner with our D though lol

Vezina has nothing to do with defense though it does help to have good defense.

Kevin Woodley from In Goal Magazine was on MvsW and said he thought Varlamov could be something of this years Bobrovski, where a new goalie coach fixing a few details will make a big difference for the goalie.

Hope he's right.

Well, with an awful defense, his stats will suck even if he plays very well.

So far through his career Varly has amassed a .912 save percentage. At first I thought that was actually pretty decent, given what we have seen at times. Then I realized in any given season that is in the 25-30 range of goaltenders' save percentage. Doesn't help that over half his career has been played in Colorado. Wouldn't surprise me if his save percentage was around .920, and he finished in the top 15 for that category.

It's Varly's pk sv% that drives down his numbers. His ES numbers are ok, not bad not great. Ofc his numbers with Avs are 0.5% below what it was with WSH.

remember in 2011/2012 when he had a save percentage of like 920 in shootouts lol. He obviously has the talent to be a top tier goalie. He just needs to work on the more simple things and I think Allaire, Roy and Gigure should be pretty decent mentors.

Just hope he can turn his game to the next level with the goaltending support he now has. I'm a huge Varly homer, love his athleticism.

Just hope Roy likes what he sees from him and doesnt look for an upgrade that would hurt us - ie getting Miller. Great goaler but the price would be high, and I want to see what Varly can do with a stronger D (if we ever get to that point)

That tells me that he might not trust his defensemen, and is trying to compensate for them.

I think that was quite obvious last year.

Spot on. Our defense is league wide THE WORST, so I can understand Varlamov 100%. Not to mention he was one of the best goaltenders KHL before coming to NHL(over 94% saving percentage in the second best league in the world with NHL players), so he was ready to dominate in NHL as well, but most of the time defense just let him dry out. It seemed like defense trusted too much Varlamov. There's reason why Roy/Sakic dumped Zanon/Hunwick/O'Brien etc.. They suck.

," Varlamov said. "I can't say what I'm doing [differently]. I don't want to tell everybody how I'm going to play."

Roy said Varlamov is keeping his glove higher than in the past in an attempt to show shooters less net, but that's about as far as anyone will go regarding changes to Varlamov's technique.

I hope that Allaire works more on refinement and growth rather than a complete changing of Varly's style.

I don't mind that mask.

There's definitely been a lot worse.

I was always sure that he can be an amazing goalie but it's great to see how much calmer he looks like now. The goalie coaches are worth every penny.
