But you'd be trading him under his current deal, which already has an NTC (right?), so what difference does it really make for either side? Or would the NTC even of a new deal be voided by a trade?

Does make sense. If we are saying his goal is to win a cup, the odds of him winning it this year no matter where he goes is still up in the air. So why would he immediately go back to Calgary and be in the same position. He could do 2-3 year deal somewhere and then go back there to finish his career off.
