Good catch.

I would remove Gaborik. Replace him with Nash.

Beukeboom, in his first season with the Whale, said McIlrath is "consistently improving" every game.

"He's a hard-worker. He's an in-your-face defensive defenseman that hits hard and doesn't mind sticking up for his teammates," Beukeboom told BlueshirtsUnited.com. "He's improved dramatically as the season has gone by, and every week it seems like he's getting better and better."

Comparisons between the two players have been made since the Blueshirts drafted McIlrath, though both shrugged off the notion.

The young defenseman said the two relate to each other due to the similarities in their games, and that McIlrath is constantly "picking his brain" to improve his game.

Whale Watching: The Mission is starting again as Kenny G is going with the hot hand. This is a key game seeing as Hershey has same points in one fewer game.

Palm scored with 14 to go in the first on a backhanded from a tough angle. The goalie will want it back, but I'll take it. Defensemen Pyett and Klassen get the assists.

Bourque with a nice drive.

McIlrath (MCI) tried to stickhandle behind his own net, but had the puck taken away from him. Needs to be more decisive.

Segal with a good play chasing the puck, then passing it.

Mission has a really good glove, definitely NHL-quality.

Parlett breaks up a 2 on 1.

Mission makes a good save, but gave up a rebound and it's a tie game. 1-1. Normally Mission has rebound problem, but this wasn't a bad rebound.

Bourque makes the game exciting every time he gets on the ice.

The Bears with a very strong stretch, but Mission answered with multiple good saves.

Puck takes a bounce, Segal almost scores.

Tessier hits the crossbar.

Segal with a crushing hit.

END OF ONE

SECOND PERIOD

The Whale give away the puck and the Bears scored from between the hash marks.

Parlett scores a bomb of a shot. Bourque brought the puck into the offensive zone. Noob and Klassen with assists. This is Klassen's second assist this game.

THIRD PERIOD

MCI takes a penalty, it's killed off and he goes on the breakaway coming out of the box, but is held up and didn't get a good shot off.

Mission keeps playing well. 22 saves on 24 shots.

MCI with a great hit.

OVERTIME

Thomas with a great play to create a breakaway and got pulled. IT'S A PENALTY SHOT!

Thomas can't get it by the pad of the goalie who stuck it in as CT tried to go around the goalie on the back hand.

Parlett tried to chip in, but couldn't, which led to a 2 on 1 that was broken up by Klassen on a great play. Terrific game by Klassen.

SHOOT OUT

To be honest, I'm not confident in Mission in shoot outs because he's not good at moving side to side. He didn't look good in his first two shoot out, giving up 5 goals on 10 shots.

Ferriero going first. Nice move, but another great save by the Bear goalie.

Mission played it well to stop the puck.

Pad save on Mash.

The Bear fumbles the puck.

Noob goes way to the right, shoots on a backhand with his butt towards the goalie, no red light is on for half a minute and then it's called a goal.

Stick save by Mission.

Pad save on Segal.

Save by Mission who covered the whole net.

Pad save on Palm.

Off the goal post, so Mission didn't give up any goals.

The Whale wins 3-2!

THREE STARS OF THE GAME

1. The Mission: 35 saves plus 5 more stops in the shoot out. He's 6-0-1 in his last 7 games, 8-1-2 in his last 13 games.
2. Klassen: two assists and big-time defensive play.
3. Parlett: scored a goal and looked really confident.

Honorable Mention: Segal - created opportunities, but didn't unfortunately score.

WOR and Bridge lost, which is good for the Whale.

Bridge (Islanders) is more or less eliminated at this point. That said, only 6 points separate the 6 seed from the 11 seed. The Whale is now 7th in points, but 9th in points per game.

Tomorrow the Whale is playing Adirondack, which is last in the AHL. They need to not lose any points tomorrow. All the playoff contenders playing tomorrow with Hershey playing M&Ms, so let's just hope that game gets resolved without OT so that it's 2 points, not 3 given to them.

So Bourque is doing well? A lot of people were down on him earlier this year

The Whale is 11-4-2 since the beginning of the second week of February. They were almost on the verge of elimination, but have played much better since and got 24 of the possible 34 points. Now they need to wrap up the season strong. Still giving up a ton of shots, but with two goalies going strong, they don't need to tire one out completely.

Couldn't bickel use a 2 week "conditioning stint" in Hartford?
Could help the Whale. He ain't helping the Rangers.

The ice was tilted in Hershey's favor at times tonight, but I still liked the Whale's play. They turned it on the last half of the third period and were able to take that extra point. Huge win. They need to keep it up! Hope they can get a little scoring depth at the trade deadline or from incoming prospects.

It's amazing how much Mission improved since the start of the season. I remember someone called him a talentless blob and when I read that, I agreed with it. He was only slightly better than a 6-foot-8 220 pound cone. Sure, he covered a lot of the net, but he did nothing else. If the puck didn't hit his body, he wasn't going to stop it.

Then he improved enough to get called up to Hartford from the ECHL, but he functioned essentially as an emergency backup with Talbot forced to start 15-20 games in a row without relief. In January, he became a competent AHL backup. And now in March, he's been unbelievable.

You can see that he's really working on his mobility and rebounds because it gets better by the game. He's been the best player on either team the last 3-4 games in a row.

I've gone from thinking he'll never be more than an AHL backup to thinking he might be a legitimate NHL prospect.

In his last 7 starts (since Kenny G began to trust him), he gave up 10 goals on 215 shot, which is an incredible .953 SV%. For a kid who starting the season looking like he's nowhere near AHL-ready, that's incredible.

Without Mission's emergence, tonight's game would've been lost because either Talbot would've been dead-tired (it's not easy starting 20 games in a row while facing 35 shots every game) or we'd have an incompetent backup giving up goals right and left.

Who gave away the puck???

What did he do to receive the penalty???

Mcilrath with a big hit on who? Was this behind the net, in neutral ice, in the parking lot, what happened? If you are gonna take the time to watch and make notes, how come you only give PART of the play, you can't tell us names or describe the full play? It's not that hard, you are already doing the tough part, go a little further and give crucial details for those of us not watching. Thanks as always.

I am right with you on Mission! I've experienced my fair share of AHL goalies and I kind of get that feeling when I know I can't trust him. That was the feeling I had with him earlier this year. But now, he's like another #1 goaltender. Is Talbot roughed up I wonder or just getting extended rest? They really overplayed him earlier this year. But this makes their chances even better! They keep winning and the teams behind them keep losing!

Stewie will make Hartford's defense much stronger. Replace Collins with Stewie and suddenly the defense looks quite strong.

I don't understand that. Why does Kenny G insist on riding the goalies until they are dead tired? After Mission started a bunch of games, including one yesterday, tonight was perfect for Talbot to get in there.

Sure, Mission has been the team's best player for the last couple of weeks, but that doesn't mean we should grind him down the way we did with Talbot. Let's have Talbot start today and tomorrow should be a judgment call seeing as both goalies will be fresh - Mission because he had today off, and Talbot because he didn't play until today for a while.

WHALE WATCHING: We better win this one because Adirondack is the worst team in the AHL and we already lost to them last time.

Ferriero-Haley-Thomas
Mass-Tessier-Segal
Yogan-Carroll-Palm
Bourque-Jean-Niemi

The game starts with an immediate 2 on 1 against Mission, who stopped it.

MCI got hit in the mouth and went to the locker room. Doesn't look too bad, however.

Thomas with a great pass to Haley, who missed on a strong shot.

Palm is a hard-working player.

PENALTY ON ADK. Useless PP. Why is Collins of all players out there with a man advantage?

MCI is playing again.

SCORE: Palm grabs the puck and sends it to Bourque perfectly in stride who makes the defenseman look like a traffic cone with his speed, followed by a goal scorer's shot (hard and accurate) that goes in. Pyett with the other assist.

I'm really rooting for Bourque to do well because he's such a hard worker.

PENALTY ON CARROLL. Goal post by ADK, but Mission also made a nice save. Mission flashing his tremendous glove again. Between his size and his glove, shooting high against Mission is an exercise in futility.

SCORE: With 7 seconds left on the penalty, ADK ties it at 1. The puck went off MCI's skate and a forward was screening Mission, making it impossible for him to do anything.

This is only the second goal given up by the Whale in the last 30 PKs.

END OF ONE.
