The inevitable was inevitable, inevitably. There's a silver lining in this though!

Frk is slow. Ferraro, I can see. Pulkkinen can't skate either.

Bottom line is, we're not exactly bursting at the seems with young forwards with great speed.

Ferraro, Athanasiou, maybe Quine

Only guy in that group faster than Mursak is Athanasiou.

Every team in the league has 3 Mursaks clogging up their prospect system. He's not a snowflake.

I think the surprise is that the once great Ken Holland and the great Mike Babcock are making moves that are so baffling that normal guys are offering better management options than they seem to be making. Its especially bad when we have been hearing how good our prospects are and how they could slide right in to our system yet they pass over them for over-payed vets and broken old has-beens, and wonder why the prospects cant acclimate while they sit in the press box. This team has lost their way when it comes to utilizing their younger talent.

Some players don't fit. That being said, I can think of a few others that don't fit but seeing as how they have some sort of trade value they are still on the team. I can see Detroit being a seller at the deadline.

I agree with all of this, good post. I liked Mursak but this isn't necessarily the end of the world.

Although, what have half of our forwards done to show that they are better than Mursak? Not too much.

Disappointed that he had to be waived, but come on guys... the dude just couldn't stay healthy, and when he was healthy he showed very little to keep his job. That's not saying that guys like Cleary, Eaves, and Miller have done much to keep their jobs, but Mursak has been just as ineffective as those guys have when healthy.

I hope someone claims him, and I hope he proves everyone right about him... dude really is a speedy guy, and hopefully he is an NHL forward.

Looks like they are going to make room for Tatar to stay on the roster even as guys start coming back healthy.

I think Mursak is awful with a limited NHL future, so I couldn't care less that he was the one waived. He's way too easy to knock off the puck and injury prone. His ceiling is what Eaves and Miller have already accomplished and I doubt he ever gets there to begin with.

The key point is, he makes .55mil. Just as ineffective maybe, but way cheaper.

I hope he clears and starts tearing up the AHL. And has the patience to be here when we (HOPEFULLY) don't retain old plugs for no apparently reason.

It would seem we have differing perspectives on this matter. My argument isnt so much on behalf of Mursak as it is against waiving a 24 year old with speed to burn (but not much else) and a cheap contract versus a 30 something plug with no defining attributes and being far more expensive.

To be specific and clear, if I were to draft a list of active roster players I would waive, it would be:

1. Cleary - $2.8M - the guy is done. Thanks for the memories.
2. Eaves - $1.2M - being a healthy scratch with this injured lineup is not good.
3/4. Miller - $0.84M - Doesnt help, doesnt hurt. But he's older.
3/4. Mursak - $0.55M - Speed and thats it.

Thats all I was saying.

Quine is not a maybe there, although it remains to be seen if it will come together for him as a pro. But he is absolutely a fast skater.

Yeah, with Ferraro's turnaround there's no doubt in my mind he's going to be a fixture on our third line as early as next year.

Also:

Z was a finalist for the Calder.
Jimmy was a finalist for the Calder in a year Ozzie was supposed to be the #1.

Holland and Babs are PROSPECT KILLLERZ!!!!!!! Y U KILLLL SO MANY PROSPECTZ KENNNY?!?!?!!

Doubt they are doing this to keep Tatar around. Doubt that very much.
I don't care about what Eaves did 2-3 years ago. I care that he's slowed down, skating wise. That he doesn't hit anymore.
I care that Miller has taken a step backward this year.

I care that these guys are throw-away players on a team full of throwaway players.

If you can't toss these guys in the scrapheap to give a kid a shot -- then you simply can't give kids a shot.

Not a valid point. How old was Howard? He barely beat the Makarov rule and lost (iirc) to Steve Mason at 19 (or 20).

He had wheels and a bit of skill, but with the log jam in the bottom 6, someone had to got. I would've waived others before him, but I'm not going to dwell on this too long.

Good luck Jan. Hope an Eastern team claims him so this doesn't come and bite us in the ass.

The Bluejackets have the second worst record in the league and having seen the guys they had in last night, hard to imagine they would pass on Mursak. We likely just gave him up in division for free.

Hopefully Washington jumps on this first.

It was actually Tyler Myers who won that year. Yeah, you can say Jimmy barely fit in as a true Calder candidate but Babs was willing to replace a Detroit legend in Chris Osgood with Howard that year. If he didn't there's a decent shot we would not have made the playoffs. Howard was rewarded by being a Calder finalist. He's also been an NHL All-Star. So why don't they get credit for prospect development?

I just find it hilarious that Holland and Babcock are deemed PROSPECT KILLAZ because Jan Mursak couldn't stay healthy and find a role on the team. I was a fan from back when Jan was first drafted but it's never worked out. I'm also happy to see Tatar do so well, and I've always been a bit skeptical about how Tatar would do in the NHL. I am happy to be proven wrong thus far.

Kind of disappointed. He's no worse than most of the bottom half of the roster. I don't get it.
