Just get MacKinnon, Drouin, or Jones and the rest will take care of itself

Kind of maybe. It hurts so much though. Not sure who we even have that can be legit in the future, besides maybe Leggio, Makarov. IMO Enroth will be upstaged by someone.

Leggio is already "maxed out" for the most part. He is what he is -- AHL starter, possibly emergency NHL backup.

Makarov/Ullmark are our two best chances to have a future NHL goalie......and while Makarov is looking good now, he did go undrafted for a reason.

There is reason to worry... But in response to the Makarov thing, Lundqvist went in round 7... Ray of hope maybe

Doubt the + from the Hawks would be worth it. Crawford is actually having a good year. Sub 2.0 GAA.

I would be shopping Pominville, Stafford, Ennis, and Sekera as potentially valuable trade pieces. Also, Regehr and Leopold if someone is interested in that sort of rental.

My view of it is this: starting at the deadline and going through with it into the offseason, we have to ship out players that aren't doing their jobs. If we can get good value for other players, then listen to those offers as well. It starts with our upcoming UFAs:

Jordan Leopold: He won't be here next season, so I expect he'll be traded at the deadline. Has played poorly and has been a healthy scratch recently but I still think there will be contenders interested in him that we can get either a pick or do a one-for-one trade for a prospect (Greg Zanon fetched Steven Kampfer last season). I'd be extremely happy with a third but his value might be around a fourth. Either that or a prospect is fine. Again, has played poorly but not poor enough to not be able to get us something.

Robyn Regehr: I don't want him traded. I want to re-sign him and I think he could agree to take a hometown discount. Would anyone be opposed to something like say, two years, $6M for Reggie? Still a good second-pairing defenseman and he's played decently. I'd be weary of giving him a third year because he's already started to slow down and will only continue but I think two years is fair. Odds are he's willing to stay. Good veteran defensive defenseman that brings a lot to this team and has done his job.

Alexander Sulzer: I'd prefer to re-sign him like Regehr. If we can keep him for around the same price, I'd be happy, although I'd be willing to give him up to ~$1M for a year. Good bottom-pairing or seventh guy here and like Regehr, odds are we won't have to worry about him wanting to leave and could re-sign at ease because he seems to want to be here and has played the best in his career here.

John Scott: Honestly wouldn't be opposed to keeping him around for another year at about the same price, even league minimum if he'd accept it. Again, like Regehr and Sulzer, I don't think he's begging to leave and it's not like teams will be lining up to bid for him on Deadline Day or July 1st. He's done his job as a goon and isn't a liability and has even had a few offensive chances and some big hits. No problem keeping him as a spare forward and a guy to play against BOS, PHI, TOR, etc. as usual. Good teammate by all accounts too. Wouldn't break my heart if he goes though either but if I had the choice I'd keep him.

Jochen Hecht: Isn't (hopefully, dear God) in our plans anymore. Slow, seems lazy at times, and is just old. Doesn't do much other than PK and has zero offense anymore. It's time for retirement. If the Sabres can get anything for him, even FC, I'd take it. However, I don't see him traded. We'll let him ride it out and finish his career in Buffalo and go on his own. Some team could give up a sixth or seventh for him but I don't see the Sabres going out of their way to trade him unless they're doing him a favor and shipping him out for a chance at the Cup if he wants that. At this point I see Jochen as content with staying here and retiring or going to Germany next season. His NHL career looks over and I certainly hope his Sabres career is too.

Non-upcoming UFAs I want to make a good attempt at moving at the deadline or in the offseason:

Drew Stafford: Two years left at a $4M cap hit and one goal all season. His two-way play is there and I'm confident he can still be a good player but not in Buffalo. He needs a change. I can't take his inconsistency anymore and we could use the cap space for someone else. Unfortunately, his value is at an all-time low and he's not worth his contract. Still, I'd try to trade him for another under-performing forward or as part of a package for a better player.

Nathan Gerbe: Yes, he's a fan favorite and is at times exciting to watch and brings some energy but to me he's simply wasting a roster spot and is so hard to pencil into the lineup. He's made a living off being a pest in his career so far in this league but it won't last forever. Hard work is what's kept him in the League and while everyone likes players like that, Matt Ellis was on an NHL roster for so long for the same reason. Size is unfortunately an issue for Gerbe and he won't ever be able to do what St. Louis has done. He's skilled but just can't be a top-six NHL player. He doesn't have the size to be a bottom-six player and doesn't have the strength to out-muscle most other players to play a defensive game. He doesn't do much at all. I'll take anything for him. He'd be a great AHL player but he's not cut out to be in an NHL lineup consistently.

Other players that I'd listen to offers for and would consider giving up in packages:

Andrej Sekera
Mike Weber
T.J. Brennan
Tyler Ennis (I'd prefer to keep him, but if he's needed in a package for a good player, say O'Reilly, then I'd listen)
Ville Leino (yes, he's not included in the above section like most would think because he hasn't played so he likely has zero value right now with the contract and injury and I still want to give him a chance)
Jhonas Enroth

No one's untouchable but players that have either done their jobs and are positives on this team and may be too important to move and likely won't be, or are high-end/promising prospects/young players that likely won't be moved:

Almost any prospect (unless we're acquiring a good player)
Almost any pick (assume our first is untouchable but the others shouldn't be parted with either, unless it's for a good player)
Thomas Vanek
Jason Pominville
Christian Ehrhoff
Cody Hodgson
Marcus Foligno
Steve Ott
Mikhail Grigorenko
Patrick Kaleta
Tyler Myers (some of you may want him gone but I still think we need to be patient with him and let him keep growing because if we traded him it could be one of the biggest mistakes this team could make)
Ryan Miller

To make the above clear, no one is untouchable but those are the guys I think are highly unlikely to be moved. They're too valuable and unless we're making a big trade and getting some good players back, I don't want the guys listed above going anywhere. They've done their jobs, shown up, given a damn, or are promising young players or prospects (Myers, Hodgson, Grigorenko, Foligno) that we shouldn't move.

I would love for the Pens to get Steve Ott as left wing to Malkin. Like a vastly upgraded version of Talbot from when we won the cup.
Perhaps Regher as well for shut down duty.

What would be reasonable coming back? I assume with Regher a lot of this comes down to whether Buffalo wants to re-sign him or not. Ott I suppose we would have to overpay for, as I cannot see anyway that he could be considered part of the problem in Buffalo.

Keep your bloody wings off my otter. Unless you want to deal high end D prospects. Or Bennet.

Chicago laughs right now. They're on a record setting pace. Why in the world would they mess with that?!

Well.... no can do on Bennett.... but Maatta is a high end D-prospect and in my world he is very much available. Too much for Ott by himself, but surely part of a package for both him and Reghier.

Maatta, Kennedy, 2nd?

I'd actually agree that right now he's a piece we don't want to move. He brings the physical vibe that the Sabres and Buffalo (and Rochester and all the other surrounding areas) value, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. Right now, he's the closest thing to emotion we have in the form of a skater.

I wouldn't say he's untradeable, but you'd have to overpay for him at the moment due to the state of the franchise. I think he's a guy we can build around should all else fail. Plus, the return we'd get for Ott probably wouldn't be enough to offset the "loss of heart".

I KNOW you didn't say this, so this part isn't really in response to you, but: I've always hated the stigma that your captain has to be your best player, or one of your best players. And I'm not necessarily saying Ott should wear the C. Just something I was thinking about. For a captain, I want a guy who cares. Shows unwavering hustle. Never gives up. Stands up for his teammates in some way or another. Is a voice that people respect due to the heart and hustle that he puts in. Carries himself positively. The C can be a chip used to create organizational buy in for people other than your stars. The stars don't need a C to be stars. Other players, who put it all on the line who aren't quite elite can gain quite a boost from that carrot being dangled. That also applies to the A. There's something to strive for within the organization. It's almost like a promotion.

That's not to say that your stars can't ALSO be that guy. But if your star is the captain or an assistant captain, they shouldn't get the C just for being an elite hockey player. They should get the star for showing outstanding leadership qualities.

When you are one point out of DFL in the NHL, there are no untradeable players.

But, Ott is a guy that I'd want an overpayment to move at this point.

On Vanek/Pomniville/Milller/Regehr.........they are good players.

If they are willing to extend and stay through the rebuild, you keep them. But give them the option to get out. You don't liquidate them like expiring assets at this point. If they trade Vanek/Pomnivillle/Miller, suddenly they will need a Vanek/Poms/Miller.

The Sabres are trying to become a top class organization. How they treat Regehr, Miller, Vanek, Pomniville via this will be telling and other players will hear.

For me, Regehr isn't in the same class as Vanek and Pommer. And Miller is kind of in-between, for me.

Regehr seems sooooo slow and I don't see him as intimidating as he used to be.

Unless he's willing to embrace the role that Teppo and Jeep took on late in their careers, I'd part ways with him.

Vanek and Pominville are guys that I think they should try and keep on reasonable deals.

Miller is a tough call.

I don't think he's a worth more than $4M per year right now. But, he'll likely want more than that to re-sign.

He's not untradeable, but name me one other player on this team that gives 100%, 60 min, every game.

Which happens to be the biggest problem with this team at the moment IMO.

If my team desperately lacks players that have work ethic, skate hard all game, finish checks, don't take shifts off, etc. then Ott is the last one I trade.

Are Matt Ellis and Cody McCormick eliminated because they're in Rochester now? If so, I'd say Kaleta.

Disagree. The biggest problem with this team is that it's comprised of a bunch of mismatched parts, and they have few, if any, good possession players. The other team has the puck too much. The other team takes too many shots. We don't have many good defensive forwards--that's actually Ott's biggest contribution, IMO.

The problem is one of talent, above all. I think people like to tell themselves that we have plenty of talent, but we really don't, at least not relative to many other teams. This is just a stale, bad hockey team. We have one of the worst bottom-6's in hockey. We have one of the worst top-4 defensemen corps in hockey.

Ott's a nice 3rd liner to have, but, at the end of the day, he's going to have little overall impact on your team's final standing. He's eminently tradeable for the right offer, just as any player is on this 29th place roster.
