No concerns
sinkers whatever
odd how he was the leader showing the way to a young staff this time last yr
now he's struggling to find himself as the 5th starter

Is this serious? He got away from his sinker last year because he lost confidence in it and his year reflected it. So he's doing what he can do bring it back to his game. That's what the spring is for, to work on these types of things.

He was "leading the way" last year because he had a ridiculous 2011 season (for which most of the signs pointed to it being an overachievement/fluke). And he's the 5th starter now because his 2012 was awful beyond words and he has to prove he can rebound from that. Not to mention that Brandon Morrow passed him rather soundly on the depth chart and the Jays have acquired the reigning NY Cy Young winner, a guy pitching for a new contract who can be one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball when he's on his game, and a solid if unspectacular other lefty who won't hit Romero's highs, but also won't reach his low points.

Never mind that like others have said, Romero is spending time working on adding a sinker, which means he's throwing it predominantly, and batters are going to know it's coming. And unless that pitch is a knuckleball, they're going to be able to hit it.

Spring training is about working on things for pitchers. On getting their mechanics and timing set. on playing with new pitches and getting familiar with them. On tightening up their arsenal and figuring out what they can throw or when they can throw it. The end results of the games or what's reflected in the box score is pretty much irrelevant.

Considering the home opener sold out in 20 minutes, I don't see that being an issue.

Most of the fan base is unable to watch on weekday afternoons - people have work and school.. I'm pretty sure they show almost every weekend game..

They could show a replay in the evening but that means going head to head with hockey.. As much as a few fans may dislike it, it doesn't make a lot of sense to broadcast 1 pm games during the week.

This sums up spring training perfectly. Pitchers, and to certain extent positional players aswell, use this time to work on different aspects of their game. The only people taking these games seriously are prospects. Even then they treat it as a classroom, not a game.

I was at the game happ pitched vs. Texas last year at the dome
he had like 12/13ks through 5+/6, he was absolutely filthy that day.

I really like him as a pitcher, sucks that he won't be in he mix

They're bringing 7 games on Sportsnet and 5 games on FX Canada. This is far more than they've ever carried. But I guess since people can't complain about Rogers not spending on payroll anymore, they have to find something else to complain about.

Have you not seen the thousands of Jays hats and uniforms around Toronto and the country in general? People are bouncing up and down with anticipation.

Locked and loaded baby.

If Romero pitches like he did last year Happ will be in the mix for sure. It's a very important season for Romero.

I see that no one really significant pitched today. Today means absolutely nothing towards the regular season. Meaningless as it gets.

Not just today, every spring training game is completely meaningless.

Do people remember our spring training record last year? Yeah, that worked out well.

Anyone think Happ would ask for a trade if/when he's sent to AAA?

I doubt it comes to that. If this was the 2012 blue jays then yeah I could see it happening.

Seems like he already knows he is going to be sent down. I mean, there is no rotation spot and barring injuries, he won't crack the pen. I am sure it would suck for him but I think AA called him when the Dickey trade went down to explain the situation.. so he kinda knows about it.

And if he does ask for a trade, we won't know about it because its best for both parties to keep it under wrap.

Better chance that Happ asks for a trade mid-season if he is still toiling in the minors and hasn't been called up.

Fangraphs article on Ricky and the sinker. Featuring evidence provided by stats nerd Brandon Morrow:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index...d-not-sinking/

Quote:
Brandon Morrow’s research startled Ricky Romero. It showed that Romero had almost given up on a key pitch during his disastrous 2012 season. In 2011, when his ERA was 2.92, Romero threw sinking two-seam fastballs 22% of the time. Last year, his sinker rate fell to 11%. His ERA was 5.77, worst among big-league starters.

Morrow found those figures on the Brooksbaseball.net website, printed them out and gave them to Romero.

“I was a little bit amazed by it,” Romero said Tuesday, pulling the sheet from his locker.

Only 1 pitcher of the 8 used today will actually be on the MLB roster. I wouldn't worry about ST games.

To bad you can't loan out players like you can in soccer... just send him out on loan for 3 months to keep him sharp and keep him happy then 3 months later we bring him back for the playoff push
