It's a shame that the Jays didn't keep Shawn Hill for minor league depth.

He wasn't exactly lights out great, but he wasn't all that bad for Canada. And being such an extreme ground ball pitcher would've worked well for the Jays infield D.

I'm honestly a little surprised he was pulled so early. He could have gone into the 4th easily with that pitch count.

IIRC, Mathieson is an MLB reliever for, I think, Philly.

He should be better than this.

Looked him up. He has a career 6.75 ERA over 44 innings.

Hill was having some issues there, but he got a clutch DP right before he was pulled. I think pulling him there was extremely premature.

Which should still be good enough to beat out the scrubtastic lineup that Italy has, with 5 MLB batters and none of them exactly worldbeaters (Punto, Butera, Liddi, Denorfia, and Rizzo) and the rest of the them are AA or A ball level at best. And the pitching isn't any better. Jason Grilli is the only current MLBer. Beyond that they've got one ex-MLB pitcher (Dan Serafini, last played in the majors like 3 years ago. Now in Mexico), one minor leaguer with a taste of MLB action (Brian Sweeney, currently in Seattle AAA), 2 guys whose highest level is AAA (Matt Torra and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte) and a whole whack of guys who top sit in the AA, hi-A, or Rookie ball levels)

Lawrie needs to rage on them in the dugout. Seriously, just pretend every other guy in Canada jersey is actually an umpire and go nuts. Chuck some batting helmets. Something to get them to stop sucking.

I think the key stat in the game right now is the following:

73 total pitches, 41 strikes, 32 balls, 2 BB.

That's the pitch counts for Italian pitching so far.

Loewen and Orr really messed up there. 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, Loewen strikes out on 3 pitches and then Orr pops out.

Meh, Chris Robinson is probably our worst hitter in that lineup (maybe Iorg is worse)...

...though that just makes you wonder why he's batting 6th in the line up.

Nope. We suck at producing middle-infield players.

How many quality major leaguers we have? Votto, JM, and Saunders. That's it. It does not seem like we are that far off from Italy at this point. And we have absolutely no pitching either.

For ****'s sake Votto, you're one of the best hitters in baseball and you just got owned by a AA guy.

What's good is that there have been some pretty positive signs that his bat is coming around. He'll be scary good if he can put it all together. This will be a pretty important year for his development IMO.
