The Cards just do it right, time and time again.

I'm glad to have him locked up. I just hope he stays at a similar level for the next few years.

Can't build a great team without a great Carpenter

I think this is a huge risk. If he does around what he did last year, it's going to be a bargain. But I think last year will go down as the best year of his career. I know he was an on-base machine in the minors as well, but he's really not that proven at the major league level. Sure, he had a 7-win season last year and played decently in a super utility role the year before, but I'm a little worried about his track record if I'm a Cardinals fan. Again, if he plays like he did last year, this will be a major steal.

He won't be as good as he was last year, but I think he's a 3-5 WAR player.

What makes you say that?

Agreed. Only a handful of players produce 7+ WAR in a season. I believe only six players (maybe seven if Kershaw got there, but I'm not sure he did) had >7 WAR last year, according to Fangraphs.

His .381 BABIP and 27.3% Line Drive Rate are unsustainable. I think he's a high BABIP hitter, but not that high.

There is just something about him I absolutely hate. Like watching him bat and play is painful and I don't understand how he is a major league player but he was so damn effective last year. Anyway, I don't like the Cards (respect the hell out of them for the way they do business) and I don't like Carpenter so yeah... I hope this contract is a complete bust.

This is a lot like the Craig deal. Lock him up early for a reasonable price.

Agree. Even with that regression that 6/52 contract is very reasonable.
