Matt Hunwick's basically our number 1 dman now, I think all Avs fans would agree (until EJ gets back). Hunny as he's affectionately known is a very mobile puck moving dman with decent defensive instincts as well. He had his first year struggles but he's great now. He's able to rush the puck into the other team's zone repeatedly and though his numbers aren't great, I'm sure he'll start racking up the assists on a better team. His value's at a high and we'll have more young dmen coming in the following year so I'm wondering what he'd be worth with his bargain contract expiring in 2014. I'd say a good 2nd but Avs wouldn't mind an upgrade over one of the pylons we have in the back end.
Maybe even a cap dump to help a team like Philadelphia out. Hunwick <--> Meszaros plus a pick or something.
What do you think HF? What would you give for a speedy dman who's finally reaching his potential and can play 20-24 mins?
He's awful 99% of the time (because he's forced to play over his head, he's a servicable 3rd pairing d-man) and then he makes one of his trademark rushes up the ice and you're left wondering WTF just happened.
Granted, I haven't seen him much in Colorado besides NBC Network games, but he was horrible as a Bruin. I don't think he has much value, but he would probably fetch something ridiculous like a 2nd round pick if he was traded.
Good luck if he's your #1 defenseman at any given moment in time.
I feel bad for him because he was looking really good when he first started. It's sad that all these seasons later, almost half of his career points came from a 53 game season where he had his spleen removed. And now here we are 200 games after the fact and he's barely matched what he did in that short time.
