Good or great casts-- but in a horrible movie

Turned in the TV tonight and caught a movie from the 90's that had a great cast

Laura Linney who had been nominated for 3 Oscars
Dylan Walsh who was in Nip and Tuck
Earnie Hudson Ghost busters and lots of other stuff
Tim Currey- Rocky Horror Picture show
Joe Don Baker-- one of the better character actors in the last 20 years
Directed by Frank Marshell who was behind lots of Speilberg movies
Marshell's side Kathleen Keenedy was also involved

The movie was the adaptation of the book Congo and it has to be one of the worse movies I have ever seen

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078723/...=tt_cl_sm#cast

Endless cavalcade of talent, from the director to the cast, resulting in...

...a raging 2 hour dumpster fire.

Maybe not a horrible movie, but The Cable Guy had Jim Carrey, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Matthew Broderick and Ben Stiller

Demolition Man. They tried, but TGE script was so effing bad nothing could save it. More of a cult comedy now than what it was intended as.

Righteous Kill: Even De Niro and Pacino couldn't make it watchable.

The cash grab that was Oceans 12: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Catherine Zeta Jones, Julia Roberts, Vincent Cassell, Don Cheadle, Albert Finney, Andy Garcia, Casey Affleck, Elliot Gould, Bernie Mac, Scott Caan, Carl Reiner, Robbie Coltrane and Eddie Izzard.

Some would say The Expendables. Depends on how you feel about the movie, but it certainly had big names

Just in response to Congo. Saw that movie when I was younger and it really stuck with me. Decided to find it about a year ago and watch it because I remember really liking it.

Wow, was I disappointed.

School for Scoundrels could be brought up here. So many big name comedic actors... I had a few laughs during it, but it wasn't close to being as good as it should have been.

^Just reading the Wiki for that movie 43 and how it got made seems like it has to be a joke or a con job, you just can't believe it happened.

Also, all those holiday movies like New Years Day or Valentine's Day or whatever they're called that try to be Love Actually and fail miserably.

The Counselor wasn't a garbo flick, it had a lot it did right, just not as good as it could/should have been.

Mars Attacks comes to mind

Whoa Mars Attacks was awesome. Some of these movies mentioned were satirical. Prometheus was a wasted cast IMO.

The Cable Guy was, and it appears to still to this day to be, horribly underrated and misunderstood. The movie was supposed to be a dark comedy.

If you're going to say Ocean's 12 you'd have to list the other 2 (Ocean's 11 and 13) but at the end of the day I would still disagree with you. Those movies were made in the same spirit of the movies from Old Hollywood. They were made purely for fun and comprised of a Cast that was/are great friends in real life. They simply made them because they could. You can tell that all of those guys are having fun in each movie.

I was watching the Rock the other day and it's pretty crazy:
-Sean Connery
-Nicolas Cage
-Ed Harris
-John Spencer (of West Wing fame)
-David Morse
-Jim Caviezel (F-18 pilot)
-Michael Biehn
-Steve Harris (from the Practice)
-John C. McGinley (of Scrubs, Office Space and FMJ)
-Todd Louiso (High Fidelity, Jerry Maguire)
-etc.
-etc.

If only Kevin Bacon was in it.

Mars Attacks was kinda like Starship Troopers, not meant to be classically 'good'.

Well it's a lousy, unfunny movie that wastes a pretty extraordinary cast, but I think it was victim to one of those hive mind things where the reviewers kept trying to top each other with their best lines about how much they hated it. I've probably seen it all in bits and pieces since it runs on the movie channels pretty regularly now, and I was expecting something monumentally awful for the ages...in the end it's just boring and unfunny, not even "memorably" bad, really.

Why? Ocean's 11 was pretty good fun. Ocean's 12 was such a lazy cash grab it was insulting. Can't say I remember enough of 13 to comment.

Because Ocean's 11 was a movie that didn't really need to be remade. They did, it was fun to watch and I've found the sequels fun to watch as well (though for me I liked Ocean's 13 more than 12).

Again, they're only mean to be fun entertainment, they're not meant to be taken too seriously. You've got to ask yourself the question "Did I have fun watching this movie?" And I'd bet that if you really thought about it, people would admit that, while nothing groundbreaking, they were entertaining.

Well I get the spirit in which they were made, but I don't think that makes them beyond reproach.

The best way I can say it is that I felt like Ocean's 11 was the actors and the audience having fun, while Ocean's 12 was just the actors.

Mars Attacks was an intentionally campy send-up of 50's sci-fi b-movies. It's got this amazing list of actors and actresses, and at least half of them die in the first 30 minutes of the movie. Which made it more funny, IMO.
