Match ROR Offer Sheet or Take the Picks?

Simple poll..

Do the Avs match Calgary's Offer sheet to ROR or take the picks (1st + 3rd)?

Take the picks. Too much bitterness not to. It's a gamble but I think the potential reward is too high. We needed something to force mgmt to trade one of the centres anyways otherwise they would've sat idle on all three.

Things don't work out for Cgy in the end.

Imagine our best player Duchene getting less than ROR in 2014, that would be ridiculous.

Also I've gone over some scouting in the past week and I've realized that yeah maybe we did overrate him a bit because he was the 2nd best player on a bad team and he's closer to the 3.5 M player than the 5 M.

IMO Match it.

ROR is one greedy ***** of ****s, but I get sense that he can become good friends back with the organization very easily.

Only reason I would not take the picks, was not because the draft is "bad" or "overrated", but it is very risky to see where the Flames will end up this season.

Swallow your pride and match it. Worry about his QO and future contract next offseason.

If Flames lose their next three, let him walk.

If Flames win two or more of their next three, match.

Take the picks. I don't think Calgary 1st is worse than 12th. That pick should be able to pick a replacement. The 3rd can get some depth in the system. We lose in the deal, but we will lose with that contract anyway.

Don't match it. $6.5 million per year is too much. Flames will bury themselves in the long run with a move like this. The picks could be high, and this is a deep draft anyway.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly...

Having 2 picks in the top 10, possibly top 5, would be really hard for me to pass up...

Do you think that negotiation will be any easier? What if it causes us a problem with our two best actual players or our starting goalie or our best dman? What if stuff like this comes up again next time he's unhappy for whatever reason whether it be mgmt or his TOI? http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2013...alanche/12635/

Not worth the headache man. Maybe it's fate giving us a sign that this is what we're supposed to do.

I voted take the picks.
But if Sherman matches it'll be nice to have 4 C down the middle that can win draws and play effectively. Tired of seeing Sgarbossa or Olver taking draws.

You guys are crazy if u refused a hell of a pick for RO.

I'd keep him as long as I can before letting him go. So CGY pick is even worst.

The guy hasnt played in a calendar year, once he'll be back he'll take time to adapt to the level of play.

Congrats! CGY is so bad and always will be.

Hang on, is this poll predictive (will the Avs match) or asking what we think the Avs should do? I thought someone was going to make a poll about what we think the Avs should do, but the wording of the question seems to indicate our predictions.

He played quite well in the KHL not that long ago. He's only been not playing (because injured) for what, a month or so?

This (mainly if they are on the edge)

If they are going to match though, quicker would be better just in case we need to trade him next year (trade deadline would be close to about now with Olympics)

Pro's to matching the offer:
Get O'Reilly back in the line-up.
Does not slow down the rebuild.
Let's other GM's know Colorado will protect their assets.

Pro's to not matching the offer:
Potentially high pick could be a better talent.
Avs would have $6.5m more to work with in the off-season.
Sends message to players that Avs won't be forced into bad contracts.

I'm personally torn as to which way the Avs should go.

IMO you guys have to match. ROR improves calgary I would guess the 1st rounder is around 15th overall, what a soft offersheet its pretty easy to match that.

I'm leaning towards match, but that could change in 7 days.

I didn't want to deal ROR for unproven assets and that's what this would be.

Have to buy out Jones if it means re-signing core guys.

On the fence here. I would miss Radar in an Avs jersey but I'd get to see him live more often.

the tough decision now becomes tank to get the better overall top pick or beat Calgary to drive them down in the standings

We have to take the picks. I think the bridge between us and O'reilly has been burnt, and we're never going to get any more for him as much as I like him as a player.

I voted to take the picks.

The 1st rounder could be a really high pick. Looking over Calgary's roster and the standings I think this pick will be top 10. With a top 10 pick I think Colorado could get a player of near equal talent (give or take) to O'Reilly.

In addition to the picks, the Avs will also have $6.5m more to spend in free agency should they chose to do so. That would be enough for a top 6 winger/top 4 defenseman.

Finally, you don't have to worry about any bad blood in the locker room or organisation. You also don't have to worry about trying to negotiate a new contract with O'Reilly coming off of a $6.5m year, at the end of next season.
