Lanny McDonald Thinks the Sharks are Old and Slow

I was listening to Calgary Sports Radio this morning and they had an interview with Lanny McDonald, obviously discussing the Calgary Flames, but in the middle of the interview he referenced the boys in Teal.

Here's the link to the interview: http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/2013/02/...ald_on_flames/

Lanny basically said the Sharks are where they're at because they're old and slow, which seems to coincide with a lot of the feelings we have here on the Sharks board (the slow part any ways), so maybe we're not all crazy after all.

This came about form a discussion on the Flames and whether or not they should blow up their core or just stay the same and be another year older next year.

Old? Not really.

Slow? Half true.

Our top-6 is definitely well below average in speed as a whole, which is a problem. Our bottom 6 is useless for everything else except speed. Our D core is fast or at least above average except for Murray.

Being 'old' is not the problem, and being 'slow' is not related to them being old, Boyle is one of the few players moving the puck with speed, along with Marleau, etc. They are slow because the system is slow, not because they have an overabundance of slow player (they have a few). They have a much faster roster than they did a few seasons ago and they look just as slow now. Saying they are 'old and slow' is disingenuous and proves he has no understanding of the real issue.

Basically what I am saying is just because you get to be on TV (or the radio) doesn't mean you have any authority on a topic. This person clearly has no clue what they are talking about and I don't even know why he's discussing a team he clearly is totally uninformed on.

I don't really think so when you look at the actual individuals. Only Clowe is "well below average" in speed. Marleau and Havlat are elite, and the rest are basically average (perhaps Pavelski is a bit behind average).

The Sharks play much too slow..the team itself has pretty good speed. If he were to say the Sharks were "sloppy" and "lacked focus" i'd totally agree.

we're fast when we want to be, which is unfortunately too early or too late in the game.

I'm not disagreeing that he's just rehashing media cliches, but it's not like this is some random media reporter, it's Lanny.
I do agree that he shouldn't be talking about a team that he doesn't watch enough, but really, what media personnel does watch the Sharks a lot (besides our 4 commentators and Hedican)?

From the eye test, Pavelski is very very slow. I bet if you went around the league and looked at top 6 forwards, you'd have trouble finding 30 slower than him. That'd put him in the bottom 6th in terms of speed. Still, he's well above Clowe.

And when 2 of your top 6 are "very slow", you add in some "not fast" in Thornton/Couture, then split up Marleau/Havlat onto different lines so they can't use their speed... and finally sprinkle some "every time we enter the zone, delay" system on top. You have a very slow top 6.

If you're a good player and you're slow, it doesn't really matter. We just don't have enough good players. A team full of Pavelski's would win the championship, and I wouldn't call him fast.

Pavelski is nearly as slow as Clowe. I got the eye test on P. Kane/Couture. Kane had a half stride on Couture after two strides; that's not good. JT is currently playing slow although I consider him average to just below average. When fast, JT is grabbing takeaways. Look at his giveaway/takeaway thing this year.

The Sharks played very well. They ran into Varlamov on a stellar night.

Just need to work on one timers, IMHO . That is the slow part. If JT shot that quicker last night it wouldn't have been a highlight save. Quicker shots and ON NET

He looked considerably faster last season, but it looks like he lost a step this season. Maybe he's injured.

Yea that's how Lanny got on the topic of the Sharks. Lanny was basically saying the Flames should trade Iggy, Kipper etc before they get even older and slower and then he started saying the Sharks were in a similar situation.

Edit: Btw just because I'm from Calgary doesnt't mean I'm a Flames fan, I never have been and never will be. The only reason I posted this was because it was Lanny saying it, not some random reporter.

Not that old of a team outside of Marleau, Thornton, Handzus, and Boyle.

We still have some nice young talent to rebuild around with; Pavelski, Wingels, Couture, Kennedy, Sheppard, Galiardi, Vlasic, Burns, Demers, Braun, Irwin, Stalock, Hertl.
