Comparing the last 6 Number 1 Overall Picks

The draft is both about LUCK and INTELLIGENT SCOUTING.

If you look at the 3 most recent 1st overall picks: Yakupov, RNH, and Hall
and compare them to the next 3 most recent picks before them: Tavares, Stamkos, Kane....so far, it looks like EDM would have faired better if there 3 first picks in a row were on different years than '10, '11, '12.

Obviously it's still too early to lay a final verdict, and Hall is really turning it up. But, wow, it could have been Tavares, Stamkos, and Kane!!!

I think Hall, RNH, Yakupov in 3 years time will definitely look as good as Tavares/Stamkos/Kane...but not right now.

The bolded part is all you need to know. Way too early to make a judgment call.

Meh, it seems like you're pretty much guaranteed a very good player, but only about half the time the player is actually a superstar (Stamkos, Crosby, Kovalchuk, etc.). The other half of the time the player is just "very good" (Nash, Fleury, Johnson), and you get the rare draft bust, which are becoming much less frequent nowadays with the improved scouting

this just in: simply throwing tallented people together doesn't mean they play well as a team

Kane/Stamkos/Tavares will always be better than Hall/RNH/Yakupov IMO.

Stamkos was a bum his rookie year.

Tavares never really hit his stride until his third year.

Hall is well over a PPG right now.

RNH could be a 50 point guy next year or an 80 point guy and neither would really surprise me.

Hall and Yakupov will be superstars.

Verdict is still out on Hopkins. I think we will be great, but not on the level of the other two.

You're looking at Hall/RNH/Yakupov way too early. If you looked at Tavares/Stamkos/Kane at this point in their development, your opinion of them would have been a lot worse.

Oh well. The main board will continue to say that these are terrible 1st overall picks and that the Oilers should have taken Player X, but, like with Hall, we watch these players every game and know what they are capable of.

Obviously it is not close at all right now and I would bank on it never really being so either.

Hall could end up being the best player of the bunch, but I would take any of Tavares, Stamkos or Kane over RNH and Yakupov.

Probably but it's closer than you would think. I think that Stamkos really tips the scale in favor of the first group, 60 goal scorers don't grow on trees.
I think that the group of Tavares, Kane, Hall and RNH will be pretty close. Yakupov is the big wild card, he just has the look of a player who can really explode onto the scene once he "gets it" or could just be another Afinogenov.
Anyway, this would be a better debate in about 3-5 years. It's kind of unfair to the second group considering that they are several development years behind the first group.

You're underrating RNH, he's having a tough year but the kids got amazing talent, no question.

Comparing any oiler to Stamkos, a 60g scorer is outright ignorance. Yea we get it nail gets "that look" he will be special ect ect. If Hall stays healthy he has the opportunity to be the 4th best of the bunch. Nail and Hopkins are quite a few steps down that ladder.

Taylor Hall is the best and most complete player out of the bunch.

Okay lets go back 3 years to 09-10:

Kane: 30G 58A 88P Cup Winner, Olympic silver medalist

Stamkos: 51G 44A 95P Rocket Winner

Tavares: 24G 30A 54P

I don't know if you have a ridiculously low opinion of these players or ridiculously high one of your own players.

Stamkos is really turning out to be a unique player, he's unbelievably good, so yes, any group having him is better IMO.

That's cute how someone can make this kind of prediction and say it like it's a certainty.

Don't worry about this guy. He basically takes a **** on his keyboard and you see the result.

Id say the only answer to this question is that it's way too soon. How do you compare a group of players with 6 years age difference between them? Looking at how many 1st overall forwards are top scorers right now, Id say you can be pretty confident ALL these players are going to be incredible. I expect Stamkos to be the best goal scorer, but after that it's a completely toss up to me who is best.

Oh, poor Oilers. They will have to do with that kind of players. It is quite sad... if you are fan of some other team.

This.

The backwards looking analysis employed by most posters on the Hockey's Future Boards is mind boggling.
