Phil Kessel is an excellent playmaker

As a habs fan it pains me to say this but I am really impressed with Phil Kessel's playmaking and vision. He still has the speed and killer shot for the time being, but every time he has the puck you just don't know whether he'll rifle it or put it on the blade of a teammate for an easy tap-in.

For those that follow him more closely, do you suspect he will turn into a more of a play maker as his career progresses?

It's tough to see if this shortened season is an indication (4 goals in 21 games) but looking at his goals to assists ratio you can see that maybe the transition from sniper to play maker is on his way.

He's become a lot more of a well rounded hockey player. Good to see because I didn't think he and Carlyle would get along well if he was just a 1 dimensional sniper.

He's being asked to carry the team and that's just not the kind of player he is.

He has elite offensive skills though.

He's unbelievable in the offensive zone, his give away to Gio in the last minutes of a game with an empty netter is not what i excpect from a NHLer though. Not trolling seriously, i always thought that Kessel was better offensivly than any Habs since he came in Toronto, but that was pee-wee level.

He really is a good player and it pains me to see how harsh people are on him... He's still young.

He really did set up a nice play for Gionta on that empty netter though

his defensive zone is improved aswell. I wouldn't say he's 'good defensively' but he's not as bad as he was under Wilson.

I doubt it. He wasn't really much of a play maker last season. Not like he's been this year at least.

I agree. He's got great speed and hands. The Leafs need to acquire a LW/C who can score goals to complement his line and they'll be in great shape.

Last season all TSN could talk about during leaf games was Kessel's playmaking ability.

One thing a lot of people don't seem to notice is that a TON of great snipers are also great playmakers (Bure, Mogilny, Tavares, Stamkos), but their shoot-first mentality makes most fans forget this.
