Flames file offer sheet to Avalanche for Ryan O'Reilley.
As per TSN...
The offer sheet carries an average annual value of $5 million. O'Reilly will make $1 million in base salary for 2012-13 with a signing bonus worth $2.5 million. His 2013-14 salary will be $6.5 million.
Colorado has seven days to match the offer or accept compensation from the Flames. Should the Avalanche choose not to match the offer-sheet they would receive Calgary's first- and third-round choices at the 2013 NHL Draft.
With a second-year salary of $6.5 million, a potential qualifying offer for O'Reilly's next contract would have to equal that amount. If Colorado decides to match the Flames' offer he can not be traded within one calendar year of that date.
The 22-year-old forward scored 18 goals and 37 assists in 81 games.
Originally drafted in the second round (33rd overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In 236 career games with the Avalanche over three seasons, O'Reilly has scored 39 goals and 68 assists for 107 points.
I don't get it. 5$ million/year contract for a 55-point player who doesn't even score 20 goals? What are they smoking in Calgary?
Apologies if this has been posted before.
EDIT : Yes, I now see that it has. My mistake. Please delete this thread.
Absolutely dumb move by Calgary. If the avs neglect to match, they forfeit their 1st and 3rd. With Calgary struggling this year, that's a potential high 1st in one of the deepest drafts in recent memory. If I'm the avs I say "yes please", take the picks and run. I would be pissed if I were a flames fan.
