I don't know guys. I think this could be Seguin for Kessel all over again. I would make this offer sheet as an Oilers fan, but Calgary has no future and losing a potential top 5 pick for him is risky. He's also not worth 5M per year.

ROR basically is a potential top-5 pick, but with more experience and known value.

the 3rd rounder is an easy toss in.

I hope Colorado passes...1st and 3rd in a deep draft is pretty good

6.5 mil for a guy never proven to hold down the #1 center position

COL getting 2 top 15 picks sounds really good...look to me like the Flames have no intention of re-building

Good move for Calgary.

Would be ridiculous for the Oilers to do the same.

Paying RoR $6.5M while you need to re-sign RNH and Yakupov would be organizational suicide.

EDM & WAS
Gagner, Hemsky for Alzner and pick/prospect- They need legit scoring depth and we need a legit pairing shut down dman with J.Schultz.

I am guessing that you guys will think Couturier is worth more so what else would we have to add in. Don't say one of the FAB would have to be in. PHI is deep at fwd and need a top 4 dman.
Our over all group would be bigger and better:
Hall; Couturier; Eberle
Jones; RNH; Yak
Smyth; Horc; Petrell
Eager; Boyle; Harti

Schultz; Alzner
Smid; Potter (Klefbom next year)
Fistric; Schultz
To me this is a nice looking line up . But remember Tamblowe is our GM . He will sit on his hands until hell freezes over or until Lowe pulls his strings

Hell, who cares he's only really produced at a top 6 level for one year. Nashville gave up a 1st for UFA Paul Gaustad last spring.
The difference is obviously the paycheck (3.25 vs 5m, and 6.5 QO after) but if in two years O'Reilly isn't worth that price, then ship him out in a trade or worst case scenario don't qualify the kid. Win win for the Flames.

Since the Lames are involved I am assuming this offer sheet involves a NMC?

Dumb move by feaster, when's the last time he played an NHL game? No way he's in game shape now. How does he fit into the flames with no training camp or semblance of what the team is like?

So it is a good move for a non-playoff team to throw away a first then walk away from him as an RFA? Really?

Could work out for them, or it could be Matt Stajan, or Rene Bourque all over again.

RFA's can not sign NTC/NMC for RFA years, or at least under the old CBA they couldn't.

Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun: Kudos to Flames GM Jay Feaster by signing Ryan OReilly to an offer sheet. At least hes trying to make his team better.
I know it's Simmons (a fool) but is this a not so veiled shot at the Oilers? He was certainly sour on the Oil two weeks ago on "Off the Record."

Important to remember. The Oilers could not have done what calgary has done we do not have a third round pick.

I initally thought col would match for sure but now i'm not so sure

He has no trade value if you have to qualify him at $6.5. You have to let him go as a UFA, or pay him.

If he is obviously worth much less than 6.5, yes. At least they only gave a first for 2 years of service.

Or they can sign him to a long term contract with a cap hit less than 6.5

I think this is good for the Flames short term, but man they continue to go against the rebuild...AND the QO is terrible next season. I wonder how this affects Iggy/Kipper

Terrible move by the Flames.

Even Todd Marchant managed to look like an offensive player with first line minutes, and RoR was fed all the minutes he could handle on a poor Av's team. Colorado won't be happy, but they were probably asking too much if they haven't been able to move him by now, and Calgary's pick will be a good one.

Youre confused, Couturier isn't a 1st line center either...try again

I disagree, they could just take some salary in return. There's always way around these situations, especially since there is so much flexibility in signing O'Reilly because of his short contract.
