Tom Wandell; Clears on 3/1

This seemed more thread worthy than just getting buried in a thread.

Sad for VVandell but sort of inevitable with the kids playing well. He just never had the finish or the hockey sense to make use of his speed.

I could definitely see someone picking him up and giving him a shot

Not that sad IMO. He is either going to another NHL team, or he's going to get an NHL salary in the AHL. Both could be very good for him. He's going to play top minutes in NA style hockey consistently. He could come back next year and challenge Fiddler for the 4th center spot or not. Regardless, it's a good opportunity for him to play. I'm hoping, but not exactly optimistic, he clears.

He may play this year in the AHL but I promise if no one picks him up he'll be back in Sweden next year. The AHL holds no allure for a guy like this, especially since his game is far more suited to the European style and bigger rinks.

He's not good enough to be a regular useful NHL player, but he got to live the dream for a couple of seasons. Good luck to him.

We signed him for three years? No idea why I was thinking he was a UFA this upcoming off season.

He's a RFA. They could work out a deal though that it's the NHL or Europe.

Troy could be right though. He could just say the hell with it and move on ... sort of like Joel Lundqvist.

Annoying, since he was never utilized correctly here. He's a winger in NA and should be getting heavy PK time, neither of which the Stars seemed to understand. He'd be a good pickup for a team that could use him on the lower lines and has the existing overall team toughness to carry a non-physical player.

Well since Dallas doesn't have that overall team toughness and a plethora of better wingers, but lacked centers he never played that here. Yes he should have been on the kill more but really, losing Wandell is not a great hardship. Roussel, Vincour, and Garbutt are all better than him on the N/A ice. I wish him the best but am not sad to see him waived.

That was a real shame with Joel. I really liked that guy. Should never have let him go.

I think Wandell really needs to clear waivers. I forgot that Dallas would be down to 12 guys when they put Fraser back in the AHL.

With so many home games, you only need a 13th forward on the road. With the new waiver rules (no re-entry), Wandell is an ideal candidate for road trip duty.

Tom Wandell clears. He can go back and forth between the NHL and AHL as long as he doesn't play 10 games or stay on the roster for 30 days without requiring waivers again.

This will be helpful when Dallas needs a body on trips just in case of injury.

That's too bad. It would have been nice to get his contract out of the way for that maximum contract issue. The Stars would have a little bit more flexibility to make changes without dealing with that concern.

It looks like Wandell's days in the NHL are done.

They are fine, and they're probably in better shape than most with only 47 contracts. Even if they sign college free agents this year, those guys won't count against this years limit. They'd sign an ELC starting next year, and they'd be playing on a PTO in the AHL for the remainder of the year.

Next year is a different story, and Wandell is not under contract then so it doesn't apply at this time.

I thought they were all the way up against the limit for some reason, but I have no idea where that notion came from.

They have 54 contracts ... but 7 are ELC's for players under 20 years old.

FYI ... those 7 ELCs are why next year could be tough despite so many current free agents.

5 of them will start counting on the roster limit next year.

If Wandell stays down there, then hopefully he can play everyday and develop some more or impress some team enough to want to take a chance on him.
