God I hope Karlsson's skating won't be impacted by the injury. I truly believe he was on his way to challenge Crosby for best player in the World.

Wow. Getzlaf struck it big on that contract. Ducks aren't a cap ceiling team, which is why they can have 8.25 tied up for 8 years. I don't think that Getzlaf will be playing anywhere near as well as he is now in a few years. Power forwards like him decline pretty quickly.

Significantly less? Parise and Suter both cost $.75M less against the cap in their new deals.

So Getzlaf's get just slightly less per year than both Malkin and Crosby.

Especially considering the awful season he had last year. His current level of production is also quite unsustainable. I project him to end the year with: 48GP 15G 32A 47P. And that is just with his percentages regressing to still high, but reasonable levels. (SH%: 13%, On-Ice SH%: 11%)

I don't know if Getzlaf is overpayment or if Stamkos and Tavares are absolute steals.

Giroux must be ecstatic.

Yeah, true. But the 2nd round is typically the best hockey of the playoffs anyway. This will make it even better.

u cant lower cap hits with more years anymore. parise and suters cap hits would be over 10m if they could only sign for 8 years. brad richards cap hit would have been over 9m if he only signed for 6 years, which is what his contract essentially is + the 3 retirement years.

This is what new UFA deals will look like with the term limit.0

It's been said 9 billion times but you can't compare the deals of UFAs (Getz) and RFAs (Karlsson, JT).

From a business standpoint the alignment makes sense. The goal is to get as many games as possible where both fan bases are in the same time zone. It also stops the southeast teams from circling the drain. Florida and Tampa are going to get an influx of attendence from Montreal/Toronto/Boston transplants.

Edit: I had the 4/5 play-in game wrong. That's no longer part of the plan. Top 3 from each conference make it. Then four remaining spots are wildcard teams: Two teams from the remaining eastern pool with the best record. Two teams from the remaining western pool with the best record. Divisional playoffs.

I'm just wondering what the league is planning on doing with the current alignment when they add two more teams. Likely those teams are going to be in the ETZ (Quebec City and Toronto 2). Are they going to move Detroit and Columbus back west? Most likely not. Phoenix is most likely moving to Seattle, so that won't need any remedy.

Wait, there's a 4-5 play-in game too? This league is milking money anyway they can.

No. There's a 2 "wildcard" spots for the best teams in either conference after the top 3 teams in the division.

^ Correct. I updated my post. Thanks. From TSN:

Quote:
The playoff format calls for the top three teams in each division to earn post-season berths. The remaining four spots would go to wild-card teams, the top two records remaining in each conference. That means there's a possibility five teams make it from one division and only three from another.

It would be divisional playoffs, not conference playoffs, so 1 vs. 4, 2 vs 3 in the first round. The two fourth seeds would be made up of the wild-card teams. The top division winner based on regular-season points in the standings would face off against the lower-ranked wild-card team. The other division winner would play the higher-ranked wild-card.

First-round winners then meet in second round in the division championship; Third round sees Pacific winner vs. Mid-West winner in Western Conference finals; Central winner versus Atlantic winner in Eastern Conference finals; Eastern and Western Conference champions meet in Stanley Cup finals.

You can potentially have 5 of 7 teams in one of the Western conferences make the playoffs, and only 3 of 8 teams from one of the Eastern conferences make the playoffs. Talk about confusing.

In this realignment, you could have one division winner play the worse wildcard team even if that wildcard team has more points than another team in their division.

Division A
-Team AA: 115 pts
-Team AB: 114 pts
-Team AC: 107 pts
-Team AD: 100 pts
-Team AE: 99 pts

Division B
-Team BA: 114 pts
-Team BB: 100 pts
-Team BC: 97 pts

Under the realignment, you will have:
-Team AA (115) vs Team AE (99) - I don't mind this unfairness as much as the one below, because they want to keep it in-division. But below is just stupid.
-Team BA (114) vs Team AD (100)
-Team BB (100) vs Team BC (97)

That means Team BB--who has a worse record than Team BA--will play a team worse than Team BA's opponent.
