The issue here isn't 2 years 10 mill. It's 6.5 in the second year. Duchene and Landeskog's contracts will be up same summer. I really don't think we're gonna match

Son of a *****.

Go for what? Dumb move IMO O'Reilly is good but you don't trade you 1st pick when you are a bottom five in the league.

That's a player like Drouin, Mckinnon, Jones or Barkov.

That's just my opinion but the flames, prospect pool is already pretty weak it will get even weaker this year probably the worst in the league, missing 3 rounds is really terrible.

Let's hope for the flames they get to the playoffs so that pick won't come bite them in the ass.
I'd take Mckinnon or Drouin before ROR.

Not worth 6.5 but has shown some promise

If it was just any normal draft I agree with you, but having two top 10 picks in this draft sounds beautiful. Though overall I hope we much, not too many picks become like Boston.

It's the way the RFA contracts work. The 2nd year of the deal is a 6.5M salary so the qualifying offer after the 2 year deal is up would be 6.5M.

Colorado will easily match.

A 1st between 5-15 and a 3rd is not enough.

I am a bit gobsmacked that his qualifying offer will now be pegged at 6.5

Very deep draft. I hope we don't match. Two top 15s plus two thirds... I like this a lot. Higher than his value imo

How is he a UFA after this 2nd year of 6.5 ?

He'll be a RFA I believe, with a ridiculous qualifying offer though.

It's a smart offer sheet by the Flames. Yes they heavily overpay him but the 2 years contract is very smart. First, he becomes UFA, so if Colorado decides to match they can't trade him before, and they could lose him for nothing. It pretty much forces them to let him go.

He sure is on Calgary

Desperate is a good word to use when describing Calgary's need for a legit center to anchor the top line.

So the Flames won't pick before the 4th round... and they'll likely finish bottom 5...

Problem is, if Feaster offers him anything under $6.5M per, ROR could reject it and become a UFA. He will be a very tough re-sign.

Ignorance is bliss right?

The Flames aren't bottom 5 without Kiprusoff and O'Reilly.

Add both into the mix and it......
  • Significantly upgrades their penalty kill and overall defense.
  • Adds faceoff help and with being a possession based team that should help them score more goals.
  • Adds some offense.

TThe only way this translates to a top 5 pick is if it makes Calgary worse, which (on paper) is EXTREMELY unlikely.

Yep. Take the 1st and 3rd. $6.5m for year 2 = Ludicrous qualifying offer when he turns arbitration-eligible RFA.

the QO is the poison pill here. At the end of next season, o'rielly is guaranteed either another 6.5M or the ability to test the market as a 23yo.

whether you agree with the move by calgary or not, the structuring is very shrewd by feaster.

Oh I agree .. I think it's a horrendous move, I meant go for the playoffs kind of move .. It reeks of desperation on Feaster's part, it's incredibly short sighted

If i'm the Avs. I match this in a heart beat. It sucks, but better than letting him walk for peanuts and in hindsight he means more on this team then on another.

And I hope we do this to Calgary when they actually have a draft pick work out...if that ever happens.

Shame for CGY. Your not getting a heart and soul guy. Your getting a guy that said he wouldn't do something he just did, sign an offer sheet.

No integrity.

This is the stupidest thing i have ever seen.....You trade ignila...you trade kiprusoff...and you`re picking top 3...where you`re without a doubt getting an elite superstar and somebody who`s going to be better than ryan o`reilly.....love the kid...but he`s no drouin and he`s not gonna make this team a contender in the iginla era...feaster is a an impatient cancer...sorry flames fans but this reaks kessel trade.....crazy...just crazy.

Plus I'm sure freeing him from his current predicament has earned Calgary a lot of gratitude in ROR's book.
