Surprised so many Flame fans are happy with this move... I'd be raging if the Habs did this.

Cue the Gomez jokes

Not necessarily. He can be signed a longer term deal for a lower AAV. It'll just come down to short term gain vs. longterm security.

He'll still be an RFA so he's not really a rental.

Exactly what the flames need! One of the best two-way centres, and he's only 21. Totally worth giving up the 1st. Unless we bomb, but ROR is going to be a beast in this league when he hits his prime IMO.

Flames want to be competitive and prefer to be in 9th place for the next decade versus going for a real franchise player.

O'reilly can certainly help with that objective...he prototype the Flames image, not great, not horrible....just maybe good enough

WHen you know you have $6.5M in the bag, it increases your negotiation rights on along term deal.

And ROR has shown he's all about the money.

Why? He was top 30 in center points last year as a 21 year old and was a top defensive center, the chances that a pick around 10 is better is very low.

Could've had a potential franchise centre or dman in Jones/MacKinnon.

This is a huge steal if this goes through, with the caveat that the Flames absolutely can't finish bottom-5 in the league. Or even out of playoff position, for that matter.

A 22-year old centre who put up 55 points last year, for the price of two draft picks. We need some of that.

We have another guy named Jankowski...

O'Reilly helps with center depth. At the moment we have a grand total of 1 center on the ice, the other is on IR.

Yea I wish we had a guy that could light it up in the nhl at a young age, to bad this deal won't get that done.

Or we could have gotten Kipper back, and won games. We might have ended 9th =/= Jones/Drouin etc.

I'm not arguing with that. I posted my stance on picking up MacKinnon or Barkov last page. I'm just replying to the statement that we had no franchise players.

Flames aren't a bottom-2, or even bottom-5 team. Never were. Don't say we're giving up something that was never there.

This is the Flames organization trolling Iginla by giving him a real center with 25 games left of the last year on his deal

Maybe this is just incentive for him to re-sign

So hell, what is the QO for O'Reilly once the deal is up? I've read here it's 90% of 6,5m, which would be 5,85... on calgarypuck I heard it claimed as high as 7,15m, which I can't imagine being the case (the latter)

It's been EONS since the Flames had a center like this.

Screw the draft picks!

Well then, he sounds like a terrific player to add to the organization.

But really, the money aspect is a little exaggerated. The rumored deals he wanted from Colorado were quite fair really - either 4M on a short term deal or 5M on a longterm one.

For any player not on an entry level contract, it's a 100% of the last seasons salary. So 6.5M. But, assuming O'Reilly's even slightly reasonable, it's possible for him to sign an extension at an earlier point in time for a lower AAV.

We won't pick until the 4th round this year if COL accepts.... (barring further trades)
