Take the picks. Too much bitterness not to. It's a gamble but I think the potential reward is too high. We needed something to force mgmt to trade one of the centres anyways otherwise they would've sat idle on all three.
Things don't work out for Cgy in the end.
Imagine our best player Duchene getting less than ROR in 2014, that would be ridiculous.
Also I've gone over some scouting in the past week and I've realized that yeah maybe we did overrate him a bit because he was the 2nd best player on a bad team and he's closer to the 3.5 M player than the 5 M.
Take the picks. I don't think Calgary 1st is worse than 12th. That pick should be able to pick a replacement. The 3rd can get some depth in the system. We lose in the deal, but we will lose with that contract anyway.
Swallow your pride and match it. Worry about his QO and future contract next offseason.
Do you think that negotiation will be any easier? What if it causes us a problem with our two best actual players or our starting goalie or our best dman? What if stuff like this comes up again next time he's unhappy for whatever reason whether it be mgmt or his TOI? http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2013...alanche/12635/
Not worth the headache man. Maybe it's fate giving us a sign that this is what we're supposed to do.
Hang on, is this poll predictive (will the Avs match) or asking what we think the Avs should do? I thought someone was going to make a poll about what we think the Avs should do, but the wording of the question seems to indicate our predictions.
Pro's to matching the offer:
Get O'Reilly back in the line-up.
Does not slow down the rebuild.
Let's other GM's know Colorado will protect their assets.
Pro's to not matching the offer:
Potentially high pick could be a better talent.
Avs would have $6.5m more to work with in the off-season.
Sends message to players that Avs won't be forced into bad contracts.
I'm personally torn as to which way the Avs should go.
The 1st rounder could be a really high pick. Looking over Calgary's roster and the standings I think this pick will be top 10. With a top 10 pick I think Colorado could get a player of near equal talent (give or take) to O'Reilly.
In addition to the picks, the Avs will also have $6.5m more to spend in free agency should they chose to do so. That would be enough for a top 6 winger/top 4 defenseman.
Finally, you don't have to worry about any bad blood in the locker room or organisation. You also don't have to worry about trying to negotiate a new contract with O'Reilly coming off of a $6.5m year, at the end of next season.
