Maybe I can get the answer here (too chaotic on trade forum:

Question for the not well enough informed. In the 7 days the Avs have to match, can they work out a deal with Calgary for a trade instead?
Reasoning:

1) Calgary gets assurance that Avs wont match, but Avs can get a little more in return than normal 1st and 3rd compensation
2) Allows Flames to sign a longer term deal with ROR for less $/yr ex:4.5m/yr for 5yrs instead of 5/yr plus crazy QO after next year.

Possible?????

Ryan O'Reilly at 6.5 million has no trade value lol. I highly doubt we match this but I hope I'm wrong and we match it and trade Staz.

So is the QO based on the 6.5 m or is it based on 5 m (10\2)? If it is based based on 6.5m then you might as well let him go because this situation went from bad to worse.

Goodbye ROR, shows he was all about the money. Hope he rots up in Calgary.

No way Avs match that insanity, nor should they. If they do match I'm going to be pissed unless they are planning to dump Stastny immediately.

Calgary isn't going to be a division rival in a year so that is a non-issue.

Hopefully Calgary falls apart and their first rd pick is top 10, and we continue our current pace and finish with a top 10 pick. Meaning 2 chances at #1 overall and even if we don't hopefully something like #3 and #8 overall which would still yield 2 good young players.

If Avs beat Flames today I wonder if they wait and see how Flames do against Vancouver and Sharks. If Flames lose those games they'd be three games below .500 when Avs have to make up their minds about matching.

At least this saga will come to an end.

No, not for an entire year. Which, by that time, the trade deadline for next season might be passed. That has to factor in huge for the Avs and their decision.

Teams can agree to any trade they really want. It might be under the table, but say the Avs say they will match and the Flames offer Bartchi for Hunwick if they don't.

Let me get this right: Draft Pick X is better than retraining your leading scorer or getting known commodity?

Yes, when that leading scorer begins to think he's above the team.

So, question. We have x amount of days to make a decision (I can't remember how many) Obviously we will take our time to keep him potentially out of a Flames jersey as long as possible. Now, can he practice with the Flames during that time? Or does he have to stay where ever he is during that time?

So ROR more or less just signed a 4 year 23M deal(3.5M, 6.5M, 6.5M, 6.5M).

Cap hit of 5.75M.

Damn, really smart move by Feaster. I hate this for the Avs. I don't see anyway we win other then the miracle of Flames winning the draft lottery and that pick becoming 1st overall.

QO is based on salary, not cap hit, so it would be $6.5m next summer.

He could still be qualified and Avs property. He would still have value at the end of 2 years.

No, four years at earliest. But the last two years would be one year deals for $6.5M.

But if Avs match, I think they would have to try and lock him up long term next summer for lower salary.

No matter the team he ends up playing for O'Reilly better be confident he can return to last year's form quickly. If he reverts to a 40 point guy the fans are going to turn on him quickly when it comes to retaining him at a $6.5 million QO.

Nevermind. Avs won't match, or at least I hope they don't

- ROR signs with CGY.
- Avs get they're 1st and 3rd round pick, leaving CGY without a pick until round 4.
- ROR plays the rest of this year, and next year (~110 games), and then cannot come to terms on a new contract, since the 2nd year of this offer sheet is 6.5 million. He'll become a UFA as CGY won't tender him that. (same year Duchene and Landeskog need new deals).

Trade ROR rights to 110 games for a 1st (chance of high pick, since I still don't think they'll make the playoffs) and a 3rd... Yes please..

Monday, April 8 . Calgary plays in Colorado... get you tickets ....and eggs ready

Either way, they should wait as long as they can.

Doesn't the new CBA (or at least, the framework for the new CBA) change the offer sheet process somewhat? I thought it allowed the original team to rejigger the contract details somewhat so long as the AAV was the same as the offer sheet. Am I totally out to lunch on this?

Then he is gone, and unless he becomes a first line center the Flames are screwed also, because he isn't going to be worth that kind of money. So after next season the Flames lose him also.
