Dreger said most teams he has talked to think the Avs will take the picks instead of paying him $6.5M next season.

So Sherman played hardball in trade negotiations and might get less than what teams were offering. That better be a top 10 pick if we aren't matching.

Seriously I think you guys should go with the picks. Calgary is not going anywhere with or without O'Reilley and it could pay off big time. Sad to see a prospect go but it's a good opportunity for Colorado to draft two solid prospect in the first round, probably two top 10.

Don't match, get the draft picks. That's what I'd do.

As much as it pisses me off I can't blame ROR at all. That's a lot of money.

Fyi, if he doesn't play at least 60 games next year we will not be forced to sign him to a one year qualifying offer and according the CBA could make it a two way contract. If he's really bad and he takes the two way qualifying offer, we could bury him for 875k while the contract wears off.

I say let him walk and double up on 1st rounders for this awesome draft. It's like flipping a 2nd (though a successful one) for a 1st/3rd. That's highway robbery on paper. What if we picked twice in the top 5 and got Jones AND Drouin/Barkov? We'd forget about ROR in about a week.

TAKE THE PICKS!!!!! Let him and his crazy dad milk Calgary for 6.5 Mil after next season, because they are going to do the same **** next negotiation period when we ask for him to take a paycut because he isn't playing like a guy worth 6.5 million.

Does Calgary have a Landeskog to pair him with? No? What's that about Baertschi lolz? Get out ROR.

If Calgary's pick is better than ~12, we almost have to take the picks.

Let me rephrase... if we think it is going to be better than 12, we take the picks.

No way does ROR deserve 6.5M now or in the future. His contract will expire when Varly, Duchene, and Landy need new deals.

As a fan, it's just as well he goes. He'd have to be the second coming of Forsberg with that final year salary for me not to end up hating him as much as I've ever hated a guy in an Avs sweater. I mean, sure if he earns that $6.5M, all is forgiven. He will have developed into a stud. But the chances of that happening are slim. I'd much rather hate him as a member of the Flames and wish for schadenfreude all around.

This goes to show how dark it is to be an Avs fan right now. Can't keep good players, can't get the best value for them, inept leadership, injuries, terrible coaching, mediocre product... blech.

He's a good player but he's not worth 6.5 mill.

Take the pick, and there is a chance Johns can be one of the picks Avs will have.

this is one idea but his value will be low because other teams will be weary of the 6.5 QO

This contract forcing him to get a QO of 6.5M won't make his trade value high enough to get us a better deal than a 1st and a 3rd. IMO.

On the other hand, if you don't match what would you have to pay Stastny to stick around or an UFA scrub like Roy or Ribero?

With that 1st overall you'd have a shot at drafting centers such MacKinnon, Barkov, Lindholm or Monahan. ROR wont do much for the Flames this year at least so it'll be a top 5 pick.

not to be mean either, not my intention trust me, you guys arent doing so good either. potentially have two first picks in the top 10. In a draft like this year, that's pretty cool.

At the same time, youd crippled and already poor team in your division that cant really rebuild since they wont have a pick in the top 3 rounds and their farm is pretty weak as it is.

Can't trade him for 365 days, which is after the deadline next year. And who would trade for his bat**** crazy 6.5m qualifying offer?

If cap goes down to 64 mil next year, Flames are 9.6 million over the cap with only Iginla, Comeau, and Babchuk UFA's and Iginla probably resigning. They gotta trade or amnesty players quickly if the Avs don't match
