The funny part that everyone seems to be missing is that the Avs can easily bail themselves out of this. Its called we have Stastny on basically the same contract. At this point if we don't want all this money tied up on our centers we simply find a trading partner for Stastny. I'd say there is about a 95% chance that Stastny is traded at either this years deadline dependent on how we are playing or at the next draft. Then basically what we are saying is that ROR is replacing Stastny as the 2nd line center behind Duchene. Overpaid probably, but not a bad exchange.

For those who think this deal kills any chance of re-signing Landy, Varly and Duchene you are probably taking some good drugs. Its very simple math for the Avs take Stastnys current contract and subtract RORs now current contract and the Avs actually save 1.5M per. All this signing is the signal of the end of Stastny in Colorado, which isn't the end of the world as long as you trade him for a decent asset before you let him walk in UFA.

I just cannot understand why they did this. They could have signed him for less months ago... Now they have a disgruntled O'Reilly make more money than before... I just can't wrap my head around it

Becuase their back was against a wall. Flames could have offered the same contract for Subban had he still been holding out. I don't think the Habs would have liked to pay him that much, but would do so not to lose him. There is no way to know when an offersheet is coming.

ROR, EJ and Wilson back into the lineup will work wonders. I can see the Avs breaking Chicago's streak.

No GM is willingly going to pay an RFA, UFA's money unless he has to. That's just the business.

What do you think RoR gets moved for now?

I'm thinking next to nothing this contract is bad news bears.

Who wants to trade for a lead weight to put on their paraglider?

Goes to show that young NHL players are more valuable than draft picks.

When they have to secure talent they do. It's not like this contract is THAT awsesome.

They had to match. You don't want to lose a player like ROR for just draft picks. I think they will either trade ROR at the trade deadline next year or they trade Stastny. Their not going to want to pay a center that kind of money to play on their third line.

They should've been smarter.

Should've known someone was gonna OS him soon. They could've had him for cheaper.

How will ROR be welcomed?

Just like any other player. They all know it's business and any teammate with hurt feelings over this is arguably worse than anyone could reasonably say O'Reilly has been.

A player fighting an owner for more money?

No way his teammates will ever forgive him! They never did anything like that 3 months ago!

This is a punishment match. Colorado wants to show all of their players now and future that you can not hold out on them then go to a team of your choice. They want guys to act like Duchene, not O'Reilly. So they have signed him, trapped him and it will be interesting to see what they do to him...maybe stick him in the AHL and then trade him to a team in the East in a year.

What horrible managment on Colorado's part. You coulda had him helping you win some games this year for likely the same price tag, but they stubbornly hold out and wait until they are forced to make a decision.

Problem 1: With ROR getting $6.5M that significantly inflates there other players salaries when time comes to sign them.

Problem 2: They cant trade him for one calendar year. The 2013-14 trade deadline is not set yet. Its usually end of Feb or early March. With next year being an Olympic year, if there is a stoppage then it likely gets delayed in March, if not then they cant move him until the offseason of the final year of the contract.

Problem 3: you can resiggn the other free agents...but it serious handicaps them. With a hard salary cap you need to allocate the $64.3M cap to what you have on each line. $35M (14 players) for the forwards, $25M for the Dmen and goalies (9 players). The extra $4+M is for call ups and dead money. if you allocate $4M for the bottom 5 players. you allocate something like: $14M for line 1, $10M for line 2, $7M for line 3. He is a 3rd line center so he eats up almost all the 3rd line salary.

Count on it: If the deadline is set for a date in March 2014 for next year He WILL be traded for something.

Trading Stasny: It must be done at this years trading deadline to get the max value. Trading him at the draft will lower is value a lot. Teams would be more willing to pay is salary for 2 playoff runs than only for one playoff run.

I can't imagine anyone taking on Stastny at this years trade deadline, or in the offseason. That contract's too much of an albatross. Maybe next years deadline, but given that his winger's will probably still suck and his ice time will more than likely go down, I can't see much of a return for Stastny by then.

What then? O'Reilly better have one helluva season next year, or the Avs are looking at the same conundrum--overpaying for potential, at $6.5 million, this time on a long-term contract. They'll also be negotiating a new deal with ROR the same time as Landeskog, Duchene, McGinn and Varlamov are also RFAs. Not impossible, but that'll be a nightmare, because everyone's value will be skewed by having to qualify ROR at that price. They also desperately need to address what is one of the most untalented collections of defensemen in the league. Maybe some of the kids will be ready, maybe not. Of course Elliott & Barrie will also be RFAs at the end of 2014, adding to the negotiating fun.

They've put themselves in a tough spot. ROR is a fine young player, but management has handled this terribly.
