Everybody knows the blindside punch on Jamie Macoun. (the guy also had over 1200PIM so no angel we're talking about here)
Of course it was dirty. It was one incident in what was a regularly bloody battle of Alberta and with levels of game intensity and violence rarely seen today. Mess in those games had to battle with several Flames and having to climb mountains like Joel Otto.
Benn was playing the Edmonton Oilers and trying to manufacture a reason to be upset.
What I'm stating is that instance by Messier was the worst ever in a very long career and arguably(other than elbows and some hits) more of an outlier for Mess.
Benn is flirting with making this mayhem a routine part of his game. You could see that all night. Shoulda been tossed in the first period imo.
To be fair to Benn, let's give him an entire career before we start labelling him a puke and dirty player as some have done. I'm not sure if he's ever been suspended before and have never thought of him as particularly dirty player before, nor have I ever heard you mention it until after this game.
