Anyone noticing less attention on the Leafs than before?

Now that the Leafs are winning and are more competitive, anyone notice that there seems to be less attention from the media and people in general. Have you noticed more or less of a buzz now that the Leafs seem to be on the upswing?

For example, I've noticed that the amount of TSN comments on Leafs articles seems to have dropped off from the past.

Guess maybe it has to do with the shortened season, so there's more hockey to talk about.

It's because the Leafs are playing good. The media enjoys to jump all over them when they play bad

Nope. Same amount of attention they've always had. It's just more positive then it's been in a long time. The more sensitive you are to negative talk about the Leafs the more likely you are to pay attention to it.

Burke is no longer here. He is one of the more entertaining interviews in the league and a great promoter.

Has a lot to do with the media having nothing to complain about. When you're winning and the team playing positively for the most part of the season it can be "boring" for media types. The media is all about feeding people negative news and fear. Being a journalism student one thing you learn is no one wants to read or watch good news about others.

Were relevant again so no one cares. We can no longer be the joke of the league, plus the whole feaster fiasco took some heat off for what looks to be a long time.

This is what MLSE wanted when they made the change.. Less focus and negative attention brought on the organization and unnecessary regular media attention, particularly on themselves as a fallout.

Quietly going about business and a winning team for the Fans to support the goal of new ownership.

They spent most of last season complaining about Burke/Wilson, kadri a bust and what the leafs can get for him (actually they decided he was a bust at 19), should Phaneuf have his captaincy removed, reimer/scrivens not nhl material, etc. Now all they have is Kessels scoring slump and Komisarek in the press box. They'll never admit it but they want the leafs to lose.

I agree. The MSM is being great with the leaf players and team being they are winning. They could write about the struggling Kessel who has 4 goals this season but they are giving the team the benefit of the doubt. Good on the MSM and let's hope kessel figures out how to put the puck in the net

Yep. Bell and Rogers own most of the media outlets in TO.

They don't **** in their own backyard. Even when the leafs lose, it's not as bad as it was a year ago. Part of the plan for management is to keep the negativity down and the club being more attractive. changing the culture and luring some investments or FAs.

They're winning so the bandwagons dont give a ****.

TSN @ Sportsnet are now owners, so staff can't be as negative on the Leafs. If so you may get shuffled out the door.

Burkes biggest mistake was making it all about him, now that there is not a "entertainer" holding the stick the focus can be elsewhere Carlyle is a lucky/smart SOB he is going to benefit from Burkes rebuilding of the organizations depth and have a low key GM in the background.

You don't hear anywhere near the amount of Leafs rumours so far this season either.

Also the MSM and fans have been burned by the 18 wheeler collapse of last year. And so no one MSM nor fans and hockey analysts want to get too excited about the leafs because they are as likely to repeat last year collapse as make the playoffs.

That is, I know MSM are jokes as reporters but no one wants to write about how the leafs are playoff bound just to be shown wrong again

They're all quietly biding their time praying the 18 wheeler drifts off a cliff.

It's three things really:

1) There is still a lot of worry about a significant drop off in the standings much akin to what happened last year. This team was well on their way to making the playoffs, and then boom, down to the bottom.

2) New Owners - Bell/Rogers are easily the largest media comglomerates in Canada, and if you think they don't control the message in the media - they do. The Team 1040 in Vancouver(known to bash the Leafs at every opportune) has suddenly become very polite, respectful of the Leafs, complimentary as such. Why? Bell owns them.

3) On-ice performance - the team is Top 10 in Goals For, and Goal Against, and does also have a decent PP & PK stats as well. This team isn't getting lucky winning games, they're consistently winning, and have only racked up two 2-game losing streaks all year.

No not really, still get a ton of attention. One difference is Nonis seems much quieter than Burke.

Season is half over and not one press conference!

It's the calm before the storm. The storm=we will either burn out and crash or make the playoffs.

I don't thiink there is any less attention to them. Same number of stories in the papers, talk radio is 90% leafs but the types of stories have changed. Much more up beat, much better spotlight. Lots of good stuff about Kadr, JVR Kostca early on and the goalies.

Last year it was Don cherry vs Burke/Wilson. All of them loud and talk way to much. Cherry wanted Kardi up, and Burke/Wilson fired. He voiced his opinion and you gt a week worth of stories. Burke comes back with something, you have a week full of stories. Wilson tweets, extented, week full of stories. Kadri has good game in minors, Cherry goes on HNIC you have a week worth of stories.

This year is the shut up and play attitude from Nonis/Carlyle- no sound bites, short vanilla answers and there is nothing to talk about. If Burke was here he would have a press conference weekly talking about how smart he was for bringing in JVR, Dion is the norris winner and that Kessel is having a great season despite not scoring at a great clip, and we would have a week full of stories.

The Blue Jays historic season is underway.

Actually, a few more Saturday nights off might make the Leafs more hungry for home ice wins

The circus act left town when the ring leader got fired. The team was a joke and the media had an enemy in Brian Burke. The media loved ridiculing and mocking the Leafs with the buffoon in charge. Had to be at least a little concerning with the new media giants taking ownership of the team. They bought the Leafs for content and the ability to sell content. Nobody in their right mind slags their own product when trying to sell it to the masses...Advertising and marketing work opposite of that..If anything it involves boosting the brand, embellishing the brand and promoting the brand.
