Nichol may have slowed down (our 4th line in general is not the 4th line of last year) but he is still winning faceoffs and Cracknell isn't speedier (he's on the slow side). Porter is very fast though and Porter-Sobotka-Reaves would probably be pretty good.

I am not sure if he has lost that much speed. He still has a motor for sure. But he is chasing more than catching (more than he used to). I think it is more about his positioning and/or mental quickness. Either way, it just seems like he is about done.

While I agree that winning faceoffs is important, if we could upgrade from Nichol and have a guy that could still win faceoffs, then we would be in a solid position at the 4th line pivot.

Nichol looked good early in the year because Sobotka-Nichol-Reaves was intact. That line looked good because the other lines were doing their jobs. Now that Nichol doesn't have consistent linemates, he has tunnel vision. He doesn't use his teammates well at all unless his linemates make his job as simple as possible and he can easily predict what they'll do. Everyone's game unravels if they act like they're the only guy out there. In Nichol's case, it's not because he's selfish, but because he's just about the simplest player who can hack it at the NHL level.

If Steen comes back and the lineup solidifies itself a bit, Nichol will look better, but we'll be left wanting more from him as long as he has a guaranteed roster spot. Reaves, Sobotka, and Schwartz are the only guys who have done regular bottom line shifts and look hungry every night. That's why it's great that Porter, Cracknell, and Murray can step in without being liabilities. And maybe that's one of the problems this year: the right guys haven't been at risk of losing icetime and favorable responsibilities. For all of their depth, they still need AHL-level guys knocking on the door to make it work.

Maybe we need to call up Cundari or Woyrika, send down Murray, sit Redden and Russell. See if that can work for dmen too.

I'd like to see Cundari called up, give him a chance to contribute, why not? He can't be much worse then Redden or Russell right now.
