Pretender or Contender? How do these teams rate?

In terms of winning the 2004 Stanley Cup, how would you rate these teams, "Pretender or Contender"?

Anaheim Mighty Ducks

Colorado Avalanche

Los Angeles Kings

Toronto Maple Leafs

Dallas Stars

Vancouver Canucks

Ottawa Senators

St Louis Blues

Detroit Red Wings

Philadelphia Flyers

New York Rangers

Tampa Bay Lightning

Edmonton Oilers

Minnesota Wild

Nashville Predators

Montreal Canadiens

Boston Bruins

Washington Capitals
Edit: Add New Jersey

I originally left them off because it seemed like such a no-brainer.

Anaheim Mighty Ducks-Pretender (this one was tough, but i don't see it again)

Colorado Avalanche- Contender (no brainer, imo)

Los Angeles Kings- Pretender (Health and not enough secondary offense, imo)

Toronto Maple Leafs- Pretender (look at the defense)

Dallas Stars- Contender (another no brainer, imo)

Vancouver Canucks- Contender (barely, need more secondary offense and better goaltender, though)

Ottawa Senators- Contender (the favorites, imo)

St. Louis Blues- Contender (a healthy pronger will mean a lot for them)

Philadelphia Flyers- Contender (I'm biased, but I think they'll put everything together this year and Pitkanen will make a difference)

New York Rangers- Pretender (why are they on this list?)

Tampa Bay Lightning- Pretender (D's not good enough)

Edmonton Oilers- Pretender (could use more D depth and a big center)

Minnesota Wild- Pretender (even with Gaborik, just not talented enough)

Nashville Predators- hah

Montreal Canadians- Pretender (not enough there, but look good for future)

Boston Bruins- Pretender (secondary offense, defense, and goaltending are all questions)

New Jersey Devils- Contender (champs, Brodeur, enough said)

Ducks- contender, slightly improved will be mostly in Giggys hands again

Aves- contender, need goalie before playoffs

Kings- pretender, playoffs if healthy, but not enough for contender

Leafs- pretender, playoffs, but not enough D

Stars- contender, Turco will be tested a little more than last year

Nucks- pretender, not enough depth and still don't like goalies, although could finish first in west

Sens- contender, great team fav in east

Blues- pretender, good team Pronger helps still no goalie

Wings- contender, hate to admit but fav in west w/ Hasek and D

Flyers- contender, great team suspect goal, hepfully Esche or Hackett will emerge

Rangers- pretender, like usual have fun glen

Lightning- pretender, lose of Prospal hurts still think their and up and coming team

Oilers- pretender, not enough yet, some good young players

Wild- pretender, not sold on last year but should still compete for playoffs

Predators- pretender, a few years and snipers a way

Habs- pretender, even if Theodore bounces back which I think he will

Bruins- pretender, great 1st line not much else

Edit: Devils- contender, loss of nieuwendyk hurts, d's getting older, but still an all around solid team and should contend for 1st in east

Maybe it's because the first post has no mention of the Devils.

I added the Devils in an edit. I left them off because it seemed so obvious that they are a contender.

Just curious how is Colorado a contender and the Rangers are Pretenders? Both teams are loaded with superstar players and no goalie.

Simply because of the past and the attitude of the players. The Rangers have basicelly the same team as last year and look what they did.

Quick question

Would you rather have

Sakic, Kariya, Selanne, Forsberg, Hejduk, Tanguay, Blake, Foote & Morris

or

Lindros, Nedved, Kovalev, Carter, Rucinsky, Hlavac, Holik, Messier, Poti & Leetch

Right now, I'd say Colorado's players but before some of those guys got to NY they put up great numbers, NY has a few better players than the ones you mentioned too. How do we know Kariya and Selanne won't turn into Carter and Rucinsky? There's still just one puck.

Who's better though Dunham or Aebischer? Right now I think you would have to say Dunham.

Hey, as a Stars fan I am all for it.. but I don't see why they wouldn't be able to compete with the likes of Ottawa, Dallas, Jersey or Colorado..

Just want to know your reasoning behind it, I respect it though, just curious..

Yes I'll take Dunham over Aebischer.

If you drafted the top 9 players for each team, just for this upcoming season, I think the draft would go like this

Forsberg
Blake
Sakic
Foote
Kovalev
Leetch - depending upon his health could move up or down
Kariya
Hejduk
Lindros
Nedved
Morris
Carter
Holik
Selanne
Tanguay
Poti
Hlavac
Rucinsky

Might not be exactly right, but close enough.

Anaheim - Pretender - the slipper won't fit Cinderella this season
Colorado - Contender - even with a question mark in net, too much depth up front and on the blue line to be written off
Los Angeles - Pretender - I like Cechmanek - but even if Allison and Deadmarsh are healthy this time is outclassed in the west.
Toronto - Pretender - Blue line???
Dallas - Contender - Solid up front and still respectable on D and in net.
Vancouver - Pretender - 2nd line scoring and Cloutier/Hedberg?
Ottawa - Contender - Does anyone think otherwise?
St. Louis - Contender - Forwards and D make up for Osgood's shortcomings.
Detroit - Contender - Last kick at the can before retooling?
Philadelphia - Contender - despite a dreadful powerplay and questionable netminding
Rangers - Pretender - Chemistry?
Tampa Bay - Pretender - overachieved.
Edmonton - Pretender - going places and fun to watch, but a long long shot.
Minnesota - Pretender - coaching sure makes a difference but they stll don't have the personnel
Nashville - Pretender - playoffs?
Montreal - Pretender - Why are they even listed? If all the planets align properly perhaps in 3+ years.
Boston - Pretender - Up front they're scary, after that not so much.
New Jersey - Contender - Even if they start slow - this is the team that everyone in the league wants to avoid come playoff time.

I'd say that's pretty close but you've made my point for me, not much difference in the two, or should I say not a huge difference.

I'm just not really inspired by what they've got going on at forward, and I don't think Hasek is going to be "The Dominator" that some people are expecting.

Don't get me wrong- I think they'll be OK, but in my view just not a favorite to win the cup right now.
