Never realized he could join the team now without burning a year on his ELC..

He's coming along faster than I assumed he would. The fact that his play is accelerating these talks is encouraging. Don't know what to think besides give it the old wait an see.

Replace Hainsey with Kulda and I think you've got it. Hopefully Redmond gets better to add even more depth.

He will burn a year of his ELC after he plays his 6th game.

In the NHL right? Wasn't thinking about putting him the NHL yet more like Ice Caps for the season and give him the Scheifele press box/practice treatment (knock on wood) should we see the second season.

Sorry, thought you were talking about the NHL.

...but may not get to UFA any sooner: witness what Buffalo did with Grigorenko. If he's (on the roster? plays?) less than 23 games, I don't think it affects his UFA eligibility.

Holden's the master at the CBA and contract stuff - I'm sure he'll jump in.

Agreed. There is that component as well. If he played more than 5 and less than (23 is it?) it's just a money thing. It's year 1 gone off his ELC, but he still has 7 years to go until UFA.

The money thing is important, but getting experience is important too (especially if the thought is that not only will he play a big role next year, but that the team would then have to make another move or two to compensate, i.e Postma, Clitsome, Redmond, Stuart, Hainsey)

I would probably be more mindful of the loss of the non-ufa year than the loss of the ELC year myself.

Holden can set us all straight though like you said.

Yes, the second Trouba would play his 6th game this year (regular season + playoffs, both count the same) he burns a year off of his ELC.

And it takes 23 games game on roster of REGULAR SEASON to burn a year of UFA status (so we can't hit that). Normally it's 40 games, but it appears to be 23 this year.

Of note, Trouba can sign an ELC now and go to St. John's or Winnipeg for this year. But let's say next year he doesn't make the Jets. So he spends the year in St. John's appearing in less than 9 games with the Jets, that year DOES NOT count towards his ELC either, since that is his 19 year old year.

They way we've been drafting having all those picks would all but assure us of finding a couple diamonds in the ruff like Lowry.

or failures like Sutter, Brassard...

you never know

also, not a fan of having too many rights expiring all at the same time... but I'm sure Chevy is smart enough to know that

At least one member of Jets staff ranks Trouba higher, The Hockey News future watch for this year has Trouba above Scheifele as Jets #1 prospect and as I understand it each teams rankings come from someone within the organization.

Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus had Trouba surpass Scheifele.

In September 19, 2012 he did a top100 prospects:
http://hockeyprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1381
Scheifele was 28th
Trouba was 42nd

In January 12, 2013 he did a top50 prospects:
http://www.hockeyprospectus.com/arti...articleid=1426
Scheifele was 20th
Trouba was 14th

We also did a poll here once, right after WJC, and it was about split but a bit more leaning to Trouba.
I'm just happy we have both

Counting a 5th round pick as a failure?

I actually don't think either as straight up failures, but putting in perspective that things may not always end up as planned.

One interesting piece to point out is this scouting staff has only ever drafted one NHLer ever out of the 2nd round: Ondrej Pavelec
and Machacek has been the most successful 3rd rounder thus far (although I have high hopes for Melchiori and Kosmachuk ... and Lowry is well MF Lowry)

I think people may have to temper their expectations of Trouba a bit. He won't be playing top 4 this year and even next year I highly doubt he plays with Bogo. It took Bogo quite a bit of time before be could handle big minutes against tough comp.

I agree. Trouba would be best in sheltered situations, playing with a very good and steady partner (Enstrom or Hainsey would probably be his best partners for now).

If Hainsey and Enstrom are on the team at the same time, I think Noel will be using them away from Trouba in the tough minutes.

Noel needs to play to win, not to develop. Also, he needs his better defensemen together in order to create the sheltered opportunities for the third pair.

If Trouba is indeed being sheltered he will be on the third pair likely with one of Stuart, Meech, Clitsome or Kulda.

Camara got suspended for 3 games so it's actually beneficial to Barrie if they don't sweep the Fronts. Losing right now.

When did he get suspended and for what? Camara is a a guy who plays the game on the edge.

Athanasiou and Scheifele just scored for the Colts, 3-2 Barrie with 1:22 to go. Talk about clutch, eh?

Scheifele with the go-ahead goal against Kingston, with 1:22 left in the third! Nice goal. Athanasiou just scored a couple minutes back to tie it up - looks like it might be the GWG, which will put Barrie up 3-0 in the series.

Go Scheif!

EDIT: Theoret ices it with an EN goal.
