Girardi is definitely more than serviceable, but I agree that he is far behind Staal and McD.

That said, I do agree that Staal is inconsistent - he's generally at the high end of his game, but he goes through some stretches of weak play. Mainly offensively. He'll turnover the puck every once in a while, but there aren't many games I find myself complaining about Staal's defense. Offense, he can be frustrating

With McD, Girardi, and MDZ with Hank in net, I exchange him for a young forward that can put the puck in the net more consistently than Stepan and JT Miller. The reason we lose games is because we cannot score, let's sacrifice a little defense for more offense

Please reread my post.

I said Staal's physical abilities give him an advantage as a shut down defenseman. On the topic of physicality and size, I said compare him handling Ovechkin, who is a huge hockey player, with McDonagh. Staal is the only defenseman on the Rangers that Ovechkin cannot knock down. That size and ability gives him an advantage as a shut down defenseman.

I don't understand why some people are still in a pre-Nash trade state of mind. Our forward depth is better than our blueline depth. We actually have decent players in CT that we can call up for the forward group the same is not true for the defensemen in CT except maybe McIlrath. McD and DZ get injured and we had a bottom four of Eminger, Stralman, Bickel, and Gilroy. Yikes.

Girardi, as much as I love the guy, is not close to Staal and McD.

McD has turned his game up recently but earlier in the season I thought Staal was our best d-man. It's closer now, and I can understand arguments for and against either.

Yeah, I agree. This team is lucky enough to have 3 first pairing D-men. I don't think people realize quite how special that is. With the addition of Nash, I don't think offense is quite the hole it used to be. Trading Staal too bolster the offense would be getting rid of tremendous advantage that the team has right now in order to fill a hole that doesn't exist.

All of you people talking about Staal getting overrated because of his last name, need to get over yourselves. He's been in the league, what 5 years? No one gives a **** about his brothers. It's a nice thing to say, because people want to take cheap shots at him, but it has no basis in fact.

Staal played one hell of a game tonight and I think he's been our best defenseman this year. I thought he was overrated before the concussion but now I think he's actually underrated by our fanbase.

I'm happy about the win too, but did you guys see Staal give up the puck which led to the 2 on 1 with a minute left, after which Nash flipped it into the stands giving Buffalo a powerplay? Watch the game, the guy makes a lot of mistakes.

Re-read what I said before. The guy DOES make good plays, he also makes a lot of bone-headed plays that (potentially) cost the team goals. He's too inconsistent to be a "Top D man"

McDonagh's stupid pinch led to the Buffalo goal. Is he not a "top D man" either? Stop being ridiculous. Defense is an incredibly difficult position to play athletically, technically, and mentally. Even the best are going to make mistakes.

You hear what Sam Rosen was saying about McDonagh? McD might have had his worst defensive game of the year, and you're right, he cost the team on that one. But he's way more consistent than Staal, and more talented.

I like Staal as a player, he works hard. I just feel Rangers fans give the guy a pass and overlook a lot of his costly mistakes. He makes good plays, he also makes more mistakes than your average "Top D man"

Are you kidding me? So many people were riding the "trade Staal" bandwagon last season and deemed him permanently inferior to McDonagh and Girardi as if he wasn't coming back from a concussion. Nobody gives him a pass. If anything, McDonagh gets a pass from the fanbase more than anyone. Both guys are fantastic defenseman. All defensemen make mistakes. You're crazy if you don't think he is a #1 defenseman.

You need to watch the game Chief. You can't compare Staal to other #1 defensemen in the league. You'd really compare him to Chara, Karlsson, Weber, or Suter? Too many mistakes. If I had one life raft and both McD and Staal were in the river, I'd save McD
