After the trade deadline..

Can players still be traded to other teams? I'm unfamiliar with this

Nope. Deadline means that is the last day for teams to make trades

Once the deadline is passed (3:00pm) I believe, no more transactions can be made, apart from AHL call-ups and reassignments I'm pretty sure. You can trade rights of players and I think if any trade is made that team is ineligible for the playoffs, something along those lines.

I am pretty sure they can still make trades, it is just that any players acquired would not be eligable for the playoffs.

I don't know if players traded inside the NHL are allowed to dress for the remainder of the regular season, but at least Marty Turco was allowed to dress for the B's for the remaining regular season games last year, despite being acquired from an austrian club after the deadline. Wasn't allowed to play in the playoffs, though.

didn't we sign Turco last year after the deadline. I think you can sign players not under contract but they have to pass through waivers.

They were able to sign Turco post deadline, but he was not playoff eligible.

You can still trade players after the deadline, they just can't play. During the playoffs last year there were two or three trades.

Pretty sure that's just for players added (waivers, free agents, etc). Think that was actually the case with Turco last year wasn't it?

Don't think you can make a trade until both teams are no longer playing.

This is about all you can do with the addition of calling players up. Everything else I believe goes thru waivers and your club runs the risk of losing the player to another team. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Turco was available to us because he was a free agent not playing in the NHL. He cleared waivers and then was able to suit up, but not allowed to play in the playoffs.

I'm not sure if it works the same was as free agents, like Turco last year. Maybe you can make trades, but they can't play in the playoffs...? Not sure.

I think this is accurate. Of course this all could have changed with the new CBA, but if it's all status quo, this sounds right.

Turco was a stop gap for the regular season to get Thomas some rest while Rask was hurt.

Zanon was a pretty decent depth pick up, IMO and Rollie wasn't bad. Failure came down to Horts being hurt and Looch pulling a no show rather than the 12th forward and 6th defenseman IMO.

I know but I mean with the holes the team had (.500 the majority of the season) those were the only guys we went out and got. Oh well though.

Nah, I hear ya. if Chiarelli is guilty of anything, it's falling in love with his own team a bit too much. He's pretty much brought the same team back year after year. The results are there for the most part, but his conservatism is a legit criticism.

The trade deadline is simply for playoff elegibility.

at the time PC couldn't take on guys with longer contracts / pay some of the asking prices because Seguin, Marchand, Lucic needed to be signed (later done in the offseason) and also because other GM's were constantly asking for them or Dougie in return.

He would have had less leverage to sign them and I certainly would have been irate if any of them were not wearing the spoked B right now. Plus, at the time the whole Timmy thing hadn't fully manifested. I think given what the landscape was at the time, he did the best he could.

Not sure about the new CBA but under the old one you could still trade but the player you picked up could not play post season.
