From an outside glance, I would say they'd get rid of him for pennies on the dollar. Gillis really never says much on trades, so it's hard to know from that aspect. It's one of two blunders with Florida that has not panned out.

No. There has been a lot of mis-information because it appears he's wearing an A in one photo. The other millionaires photos (including the official team photo) does NOT show him wearing an A.

The Canucks really need to get rid of Ballard's contract before Septeber 2013. The only reason to do the Kaberle swap would be to allow the Canucks to get a cheaper buy out should absolutely noone want Ballard.

They're considering trading their assistant captain? Preposterous!

Can you guys supply the source where Ballard is an alternate captain. It should be listed on the Canucks website right?

Gillis loves acquiring depth blueliners at the deadline...so maybe this is just trying to find out what our Alberts+Barker depth guys are all about before it's too late.

But it doesn't really make sense to have Ballard be the guy to sit out for these auditions, unless AV+Gillis are either a)completely sold on his play (so unlikely), or b)he's at the bottom of the 'essential-ness' meter and the obvious choice to sit out, in their minds.

It wouldn't surprise me if AV put him firmly in the latter category, however underseved that might be.
Here is a post where my fellow nucks fan uses his head instead of thinking AV needs to play 15 year old childish mind games.

Good post.

Ballard wasnt brought in for his defensive prowess. He was point producer in FLA. He comes to Vancouver and his offensive ability disappears. Hes making a lot of money to play a defensive game considering he does not block a lot of shots and he is not they Canucks top pairing PK guy. He has 1 pt. Thats awful! A lot of money for a guy who has 1 pt and isnt a defensive specialist

I agree. I'm reluctant to post in these kind of threads. The lack of intelligence, speculating, and theorizing from Canucks fans makes my head hurt.

AV:

- is a big meanie
- is mad at said player
- is the worst coach ever
- [insert any silly notion here]

I know. According to many on here ;

-Av cheated on his wife with Aaron Rome multiple times.

-Av hates anyone who wont do what he says.

-Av hates Ballard and Mike Gillis is too much of a 'girlie man' to step in and correct the problem

-The team wont confront AV by now because they are 'ascared' of Av benching them too

-Av hated Hodgson and should have swallowed him down daily

-Av is to blame for global warming

-Av is to blame for Hiroshima

and finally, there is evidence Av was the second gunman on the grassy knoll.

I hate it when players demand a trade, but, in this case, I would demand a trade.
I never like to make excuses for a player, but I don't think there is anything Ballard can do to gain AV's trust.
As long as we are committed to AV as coach (and I hope he's not going anywhere), it is pointless to keep Ballard around.

None of that signifies a trade request. Players can be frustrated, but there's a step between that and making the actual request; still, Ballard is not long for VAN. It think he definitely moves by the deadline.

What? He blocked 200+ shots his last season in Florida playing 22 minutes a night then goes to Vancouver and plays 15 minutes a night. Ballard can be an effective shot blocker

All of our D except Tanev have been consistently worse defensively than Ballard, yet he's behind Cam Barker on the depth chart now? Lapierre gets promoted after being directly responsible for 2 GA in a game?

Ballard's been misused from day 1. Really shameful.
I agree fully with this. Ballard has been all class in Vancouver. He's accepted a lesser roll to learn a new system, he gets zero credit. He was our best defenseman last post season and to start the season, he didn't even so much as get a glance on the 2nd unit PP as a reward. But now, after two bad games, hes a healthy scratch. It seems like AV is reluctant to reward Ballard for good play, but is very quick to punish him for a two-game falter. That must be very frustrating for Ballard.

Ballard was 3rd in the league in blocked shots in his last season in Florida, he certainly blocks a lot of shots and he does quite well in front of the net on the PK. I think people forget how effective Ballard can be, they instead assume he just magically forgot how to play hockey.

Ballard's overall ice time per game dropped by 7 minutes when he came to Vancouver, and his PP time went from 2 minutes to 12 seconds. He also had to transition from taking shifts with Florida's 1st and 2nd lines to taking shifts with Vancouver's 3rd and 4th lines. How do you expect Ballard to produce points under those circumstances? I mean, it isn't like the guy is going to beat out Hamhuis or Edler to steal more offensive minutes on a regular basis.

As such, Ballard adapted and focused on his defensive and transition game. I think he's done a very good job in doing so. If he still can't get ahead, I think it's time to demand a trade.

I wish the Hurricanes would trade for Ballard if he would come cheap. He would be much better than what we have now and we wouldn't have to play Sanguinetti when our defensemen inevitably go down with an injury.

He's going to be insanely cheap, and I would bet he will really rebound on his next team. We are gonna get fleeced here
