Week of March 4th to 10th: Sunday 'Game Day' Papers

Sunday, March 10th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in our contest. During tonight’s game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Buff).

Southeast Division notes: Hurricanes won, Capitals and Lightning lost last night.

Jets news:

Illegal Curve: With possible 2016 Heritage Classic in Winnipeg – You pick the opponent! The buzz around Winnipeg was the news that the city is vying for the 2016 Heritage Classic to be held at Investors Group Stadium.

Winnipeg Free Press: Great outdoors on tap. Let that sink in. This would be just the fourth Heritage Classic (a third one is expected to be played in 2014 in B.C) to be played, with the previous two being held in Alberta (Edmonton in 2003 and Calgary in 2011). Would be simply sensational and you have to know that Winnipeg would be able to put a fun and frigid spin on an already spectacular event.

Winnipeg Sun: Goalies saving road trip. While everyone was getting down on Pavelec for Tuesday night’s stinker against the Panthers, it is worth noting that he had played 10 straight games and regardless of your conditioning level that is a lot of hockey in a condensed schedule. When Al Montoya is healthy he is fully capable of stepping in to relieve Ondrej. They are a good tandem and they have both been very good the last couple of games.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets getting scoring from third, fourth lines. You cannot expect the top lines to carry all the weight if you want to have long term success in this league. The opposition is too good and if your third and fourth lines can’t convert their opportunities, it is going to cost you some games. Ted also talks about the Jets getting above the playoff line.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets vying for 2016 NHL Heritage Classic. The biggest question we have for you the readers (one you can answer by voting in our newest poll) or in the comments below, is who would you want to see up against your Jets? Would it be a Western Canadian team or one from the East? Perhaps a U.S. squad from the new Midwest Division or one of the 18 other teams not listed above.

Winnipeg Sun: Noel not getting most from Jets. I don’t think it would matter who the coach behind the bench is in this instance. As I’ve said before coach Noel is forced to coach the talent that is put in front of him courtesy of Kevin Cheveldayoff and company.

Jets affiliate and prospects news:

TSN: Wyman’s two points power Crunch past IceCaps. In what is becoming a recurring headline, the IceCaps lose again. Much like the MTS Centre, the Mile One Centre has lost some of its magic and the IceCaps are currently experiencing an eight game losing streak.

Barrie Colts: Colts run over Bulls in OT 3-2. Mark Scheifele was voted 2nd star of the game. He scored a short handed goal, which gave his team a temporary 2-1 lead. He finished the game minus one and with two minutes in penalties. The goal was his 35th of the season which leads the Colts squad. No rest for Barrie as they take on Niagara today at 2 pm.

Swift Current Broncos: Broncos defeat Wheat Kings at Westman Place. Adam Lowry scores again (his 44th of season) and is riding a three-game point streak.

University of Michigan Wolverines: Maize and Blue bombard Northern Michigan to earn series sweep. Jacob Trouba had a goal and an assist. According to the game notes, the goal was Trouba’s first point since February 22nd.

Jets opponent (Devils) news:

The Record: Suddenly thinner on defence. Looks like Manitoba native Bryce Salvador could be a game time decision.

The Star-Ledger: Ilya Kovalchuk scores twice, but team still struggles for goals. The spiral to the bottom of the East continues as the Devils got pounded on Saturday by the Hurricanes.

NHL news:

CBC: Hotstove tonight. The panel discussed mandatory visors and the topics at the upcoming GM meetings.

Toronto Sun: Bill Daly heading to Russia to talk Olympic hockey. Despite the posturing it seems like the NHL participating in the 2014 Sochi Olympics is a foregone conclusion.

Monday Papers

Monday, March 4th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Mediocrity keeps fans on edge. It is enough to give Jets fans an ulcer. Being on the bubble means you ride the highs and lows and the roller coaster doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Gary also touches on missing Enstrom, the Jets UFAs, Pavelec finding his game, Buff picking his spots, Wright has right stuff, RFAs and Finnish connection.

Winnipeg Free Press: Battle lost, but war rages on. Due to the Jets slow start every game is critical as the season progresses. It is inexplicable why the team has seen a reversal of last year’s home vs. road success but they will have to hope that continues for next week and then figure out how to win at the MTS Centre since upon their return they play six of eight at home.

Winnipeg Free Press: Notebook. Miettinen or Wellwood. Peluso’s injury. Jets PP. Kane’s streak. Pavelec’s numbers.

Winnipeg Sun: Will the Winnipeg Jets find a road to redemption? While the Jets haven’t been too strong at the friendly confines of the MTS Centre they have been doing well on the road. They will need to maintain this road warrior mentality as they have three of the four road games against Southeast division rivals. A clean two points in these games will be essential for playoff chances.

Winnipeg Sun: Claude Noel not hung up on team’s power-play stats. Coach Noel had the media doing double takes the other day during his post-game presser when he was dismissive of stats and then almost within the same breath used a stat to make his point. The only stats that matter are 14.3% (25th ranked PP) and 72.7% (30th ranked PK). The good news for the Jets is the PK has improved from a woeful 67% just a few games ago. On the Illegal Curve Hockey Show, Jeremy Weiss broke down some of the problems with the Jets power play and illustrated same for our readers.

Winnipeg Sun: Fan doubles up on 50/50 wins. We talked about this double win on Friday and with almost 80K in winnings, fans are going to be seeing what they can do to emulate his winning ways.

CBC: Identity crisis plagues Jets. We are nearing the half way point in this shortened season and we are about to learn what type of team the Jets really are. A strong road trip will go a long way to ensuring this team can possibly compete in the post season.

Illegal Curve: Jets power play dissected. Jeremy Weiss from Weiss Tech Hockey gave us his insight on the problems with the Winnipeg Jets special teams. (video).

Jets affiliate news:

The Telegram: IceCaps swept at home again. The playoffs are getting farther and farther away from the IceCaps as they slip into 14th spot in the Eastern Conference after a pair of losses this weekend.

NHL news:

Chicago Sun-Times: Patrick Kane, Blackhawks extend streak to 22, admit this is ‘amazing’. This run is remarkable and this game against the Red Wings was seen as the biggest challenge to Chicago maintaining this streak. Next few games are against Minnesota (6th), two against Colorado (13th), Oilers (14th), Blue Jackets (15th).

Globe and Mail: Racial equality and the last doorway. The coaching ranks remain pretty uniform.

Edmonton Journal: Willing bodyguards can’t find NHL work. Sure seems like some teams have no problems employing and finding work for these types of players.

For the Jets, prospect and NHL news click here.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show Replay:

Part 1: Ryan O’Reilly offer sheet: The Calgary perspective. Ryan O’Reilly offer sheet: The Colorado perspective. NHL News & Notes. Is the Blackhawks’ streak the most impressive streak in hockey in the past ten years? Seth Jones & Jonathan Drouin. Interview with Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette.

Part 2: Winnipeg Jets week in review. Interview with Joe Beninati, play-by-play voice of the Washington Capitals for Comcast Sportsnet Washington. Winnipeg Jets week ahead. Interview with Jeremy Weiss of Weiss Tech Hockey. Can Andrew Ladd keep up the scoring pace? Are the Jets playing Ron Hainsey increased minutes to enhance his trade value? Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, March 5th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Note: Tune into the NHL Mid-Week Show on TSN Radio 1290 on Wednesday from 7 pm to 9 pm as the guys discuss all the latest NHL news. Guest: David Poile (Nashville Predators GM).

Note II: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in our contest. During tonight’s game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Bogosian).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: If Jets can’t win this one, they might as well pack it in. Being able to take care of the opponents you should beat is what a playoff bound team does. The Jets gave the Panthers life last time they played and they cannot afford to make the same mistake this time around.

Winnipeg Free Press: Farm crop will yield little. The cupboard has run pretty, pretty, pretty bare and GM Cheveldayoff will have to do his homework for the 2012 Entry draft.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets in Turtle Derby. Just imagine if the Jets were able to win the Southeast Division. Firstly the banner would be amazing hanging in the MTS Centre. Secondly if this team had a home crowd to start the post season against the six seed, they could do some damage.

Winnipeg Sun: Pavelec wants to play every game. Whenever I’ve asked Ondrej about being tired he always says that he is happy to play as many games as coach Noel will let him play. You really do get the sense that he would like to play all 48 games if given the chance.

Winnipeg Sun: Time to kick off best stretch of the season. Time to prove their mettle. Can this team make the playoffs? They needed to beat the Capitals and came out flat and they certainly cannot afford to have a similar streak this weak against two Southeast division rivals, one of whom they play twice.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel from Del Boca Vista Phase III. Status of Byfuglien. Concern over snowstorm in midwest. Meech possibility. Miettinen maybe in with Jokinen. Expectations from goalies. How many power play goals per game do they have to score to get to 45,000? Part Pavelec plays in PK. Does the group have more confidence playing on road due to last trip? Divisional games. Best way to get into the playoffs?

Opposition (Panthers) news:

Sun Sentinel: Theodore out 5-6 weeks with groin tear. While the division seems winnable, doing so without a proven goalie is going to be difficult.

Miami Herald: With goalie situation tenuous, fans clamoring for young Jacob Markstrom. It is either that or go back to goalie coach Rob Tallas.

NHL news:

TSN: New rules for NHL draft lottery. Depending on how this road trip goes, Jets fans should pay attention to the new rules.

Globe and Mail: Approval of realignment hinges on playoff format. The biggest stumbling block is how the NHL playoff format gets “improved”. Personally I love the current format but doing it will be difficult if they had a 14 and 16 team division. Of course the biggest elephant in the room not being discussed is how relocation of a team to Quebec City might throw a wrench into these carefully crafted plans.

CBC: Sabres’ Patrick Kaleta suspended 5 games. Not surprising that the repeat offender was handed a 5 game Shanaban.

Wednesday, March 6th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Note: Tune into the NHL Mid-Week Show on TSN Radio 1290 today from 7 pm to 9 pm as the guys discuss all the latest NHL news. Guests: David Poile (Nashville Predators GM), Jeremy Rutherford (St. Louis Dispatch).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Swooning when surging is critical. It is gut check time for this team. Fans don’t want to hear platitudes. They want to see action. Too much pretty play. Time to get dirty.

Winnipeg Free Press: Not in it? Won’t win it. The Panthers were missing a ton of regular players and it seems like the Jets believed that victory would be handed to them by a rookie goalie. Well Jacob Markstrom won the game and the Panthers players did what they needed to do to win the game.

Winnipeg Free Press: Great time to make hay. Including last Saturday’s game against the Capitals the Jets were scheduled to play four games in a row against the Southeast division. Continuing their winning ways could have seen this team comfortably atop the standings. Instead they have already lost twice and even worse, last night every other team in the Southeast (Tampa, Washington and Carolina) all won.

CBC: Jets show 'indifference and ineptitude'. You have to love playing in a hockey mad market. One moment you can do no wrong and even winning ugly is a thing of beauty. But when you start losing, the sky is falling.

Winnipeg Sun: And now for another disturbing trend. As soon as I saw Burmistrov laughing on the bench, you had a feeling he was going to be vilified over it. No question however that the team last night had too many passengers along for the ride. Captain Andrew Ladd said it best following the game “Comes down to needing everyone in this room to buy into what we are doing and have that resolve every night and desperation every night”.

Winnipeg Sun: Power outage. Coach Noel didn’t mince words. He felt that his team wasn’t doing enough to draw the Panthers into taking a penalty against them. And while the Jets PP has been less than stellar, any advantage in a game like that is a welcome one.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline – Panthers 4 Jets 1. Game recaps, post-game quotes, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Winnipeg Sun: Injured Zach Redmond gives thanks via twitter. Good to see that the young defenceman is on the road to recovery.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Stability in Leafs’ crease has put Luongo trade talk on hold. Lots of pressure playing in the biggest fishbowl in the league under a coach who isn’t exactly known for going easy on his players.

CBC: 30 Thoughts. Elliotte Friedman always writes a column worth reading. Begins with talk about Ryan O’Reilly and how it remains a hot topic around the league.

Video Highlights - Eric Fehr scores a beauty game winning goal in OT (finishes game with 1 goal, 2 assists).

Thursday Papers

Thursday, March 7th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Byfuglien man of few words on personal life, ready to face Lightning. Gotta love having Buff on the team. "I was in economy. Just like you guys".

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel pre-game scrum. Moving past the last game. Would he have liked to have practiced yesterday? Do players know they need to pick it up? Stamkos talk. Why is he starting Montoya? More talk about Stamkos. Did he use today’s pre-game skate differently today than normal?

Winnipeg Free Press: This is NOT an easy fix. Accountability has to come from within. The players cannot just say they want to win. They need to do the tough work during the game to prove this and unfortunately right now that just isn’t happening. Too many times players don’t go to the dirty areas and it is showing.

Winnipeg Free Press: Coach Noel frets about Jets. About the only consistency with this squad is their inconsistency. Coach Noel knows he needs to turn things around immediately or the playoff picture will look very dim.

Winnipeg Sun: Noel says Jets have enough talent, so what’s missing? Last year coach Noel said he wanted guys to buy into his system. Have to wonder if he feels that this has taken place.

Winnipeg Sun: Time to turn plane around. Tonight’s game against the Bolts is in the must-win category. Ted also discusses Byfuglien’s absence, Wellwood on the board, goalie change and Lightning being ready.

Opposition (Tampa Bay Lightning) news:

Tampa Bay Times: Lindback gets boost. He was brought in to be the number one goalie on Tampa and hadn’t shown that ability over the last four games, prior to his big win over the Devils.

Tampa Tribune: Rookies have been big contributors. Having a pipeline from your AHL team is the dream of every NHL GM, and it looks like Steve Yzerman’s been successful in making this work.

NHL news:

Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks are a team in control of their own destiny. Mid-way through the game, I wasn’t sure the streak would continue but once again these Hawks find a way to get it done. This time the unlikely hero was Dan Carcillo who scored his first of the year. The Hawks are showing what depth on a team can do. 24 games and counting for this impressive points streak.

New York Post: Staal to make full recovery. It was a horrific looking injury as the puck took him full in the face by the eye and he ended up on the ground in considerable pain with blood leaking from his head. Good news is he will make full recovery, bad news is he is out indefinitely. Rangers picked up Roman Hamrlik off waivers to help fill the gap.

Toronto Star: First half of season features surprises – some pleasant, some ugly. There have been some highs and lows as we approach the mid way point in the season. What stands out for you?

Globe and Mail: Ugly injury during fight mars Leafs win over Senators. For those opposed to fighting in hockey it will provide perfect fodder for their argument. It wasn’t good seeing the Sens Dziurzynski lying on the ground, obviously out cold.

For the Jets, prospect and NHL news click here.

NHL Mid-Week with Illegal Curve Replay:

Replay: Intro, Interview with David Poille, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager of the Nasville Predators. Six Things We Learned This Week. Break it Down: Tampa Bay Lightning PK. Marc Staal takes puck to the eye, out indefinitely. Interview with Jeremy Rutherford, St. Louis Dispatch. Prospect Pulse: New Jersey Devils, with Illegal Curve Scouting Correspondent Kyle Kosior. Over/Under, Keep an Eye On.

Friday Papers

Friday, March 8th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in our contest. During tonight’s game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Tangradi).

Note II: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news returning to the regular time of noon to 3 pm on Saturday. Guests: George Johnson (Calgary Herald), Earl Skakel (comedian).

Jets news:

TSN: Friday’s trade rumours. Nik Antropov’s name mentioned in the Rent-a-player Market.

CBC: Finally, Jets get a win under the sun. Going a perfect 5/5 on the penalty kill, especially killing the 5 on 3 helped secure last night’s victory.

Winnipeg Free Press: Right approach, right results. The Jets played a better game last night although coach Noel will still see room for improvement.

Winnipeg Free Press: Montoya near-perfect in tough gig as he must be. Pretty impressive to have had almost a month off (he last played February 12th against the Flyers) and to play as well as he has. Provided he can remain healthy the Jets have quite the tender.

Winnipeg Free Press: Buff breaks his silence. Sadly he lost his grandfather earlier this week, which was the reason he had to go to Minnesota before the first Panthers game, rather than travel with the team.

Winnipeg Sun: No quit this night. The Jets got a clean win and that was important but they are still making a lot of mistakes that better teams will capitalize on. One of the most important is eliminating costly defensive zone turnovers (especially when there is little to no pressure).

Winnipeg Sun: Tangradi nets his first. Good to see the Jets winger pot his first goal as a member of the squad.

Winnipeg Sun: A win and is he back in? Seems unlikely that coach Noel will throw Al Montoya back between the pipes but stranger things have happened. Ted talks about other aspects of the game including Wellwood’s play, Hainsey’s giveaways, Slater’s slash, Jets are road warriors, paging Nik Antropov, special teams play, defensive lapses, lack of scoring and more.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline – Jets 2 Lighting 1. Game recaps, post-game quotes, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Illegal Curve: NHLPA approves realignment, Jets to Midwest. Will be interesting to see where this goes especially considering the possibility of relocation. This is probably why the NHLPA said that it can “be re-evaluated following the 2014-15 season”.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

St. John’s IceCaps site: Turn an old cell phone into a jersey with ‘Turn back the Tide’. A good promo by the Jets farm club.

Yahoo Canada: Barrie Colts’ Mark Scheifele sets up Saturday duel with Bulls. He finished as 1st star of the night for his two goals and one assist performance as he led his Colts to victory.

Next opposition (Panthers) news:

Sun-Sentinel: Markstrom, Panthers get pounded 7-1 by Caps. Unlike on Tuesday when Markstrom was able to stymie the Jets he and the Panthers got destroyed by division rival Washington last night.

Miami Herald: Stephen Weiss says pain was so severe he wasn’t helping himself or team. Sounds like he was in considerable pain.

NHL news:

CBC: Teams ready to embrace advanced statistics. As always Friedman pens a column well worth reading.

Toronto Sun: NHLPA not keen on mandatory visors. If 73% of players already wear them and it is mandatory in the AHL and Junior leagues you wouldn’t think it would be difficult to implement. Should the NHL and NHLPA work together to make this mandatory?

Globe and Mail: Does fighting belong in hockey? Globe readers sound off on whether this aspect of hockey belongs in the game anymore.

Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyer Chris Pronger battles depression while injured. Doesn’t matter how big a player is head trauma can affect anyone. Pronger sheds light on what he has been dealing with since the injury that took him out of the game.

Friday Afternoon Papers

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: In a good position heading into rematch with Panthers. The Jets simply cannot afford to have a let down game tonight. While it wouldn’t crush them in terms of standings in the Southeast, it is an important psychological win for this team.

TSN: Jets continue four-game road trip; visit Panthers. Would be nice to get to New Jersey with a two wins and one loss record during this road trip.

Winnipeg Sun: Ready for another shot at Panthers. Once again the players are saying the right things and tonight we can see if they can turn words into actions.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel pre-game scrum. Reviewing the past two games and being ready for tonight. Hitting the .500 mark. Needing to be better than .500. Happy to see Tangradi score, hopes Wright scores (“Wright does the right things”). Where does he stand on visors? Redemption for Tuesday’s game. Not being satisfied with just winning in Tampa.

Illegal Curve: Game day preview between Jets and Panthers. For the Winnipeg Jets, revenge might be a dish best served in Florida.

Illegal Curve: Jets 2013 playoff ticket confirmation and pricing. The Jets have sent season ticket holders an email requesting confirmation of their intent to purchase their seats for the playoffs. This does not require any payment. They are just trying to ascertain who will be using their seats. Payment doesn’t occur until playoffs begin.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, March 9th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news, returning to the regular time of noon to 3 pm today. Guests: George Johnson (Calgary Herald), Andrew Gross (The Record), Earl Skakel (comedian).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Flintstone pots OT winner. His team mate Mark Stuart said it best “Buff can take over a game and change the momentum with just one play. Overtime is his time to shine. He just takes over, he’s so big and strong and he can be unstoppable”. We saw that last night as he took over the OT with a highlight reel play to give the Jets the victory.

Winnipeg Free Press: Pavelec regains top form. He was simply sensational last night and if not for his play, the Jets would have easily lost this game. He was exactly what the Jets needed him to be, which was the difference maker.

Winnipeg Free Press: They’re half decent. Ed takes a look at the Jets as we approach the mid way point in this lockout shortened season. Seeing those numbers at the MTS Centre still comes as a shock. He also gives a sick bay update, what’s working for the team, what isn’t working and a look at what remains for Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Sun: Penalty kill finally springs to life. The Jets are putting the special back into special teams…well the penalty kill at least.

Winnipeg Sun: Drawing first blood paying off for Jets. Hard to argue with importance of scoring first. Other topics include improved road record (and back-to-back’s), momentum killers, did Montoya’s play spur on Pavelec, Pavelec’s big plays, Wright still looking for first goal, Ladd is Jets MVP, Jets OT prowess, rare Wellwood penalty, Jokinen giveaway and Little on the face-off.

Winnipeg Sun: Maybe Jets need different voice behind bench. Seems very hard to pin this inconsistent play on coach Noel. While it is his job to motivate his troops, he can only work with the pieces that he has at his disposal. What do you think? Should the blame be square on coach Noel?

Winnipeg Sun: Top three overachievers and underachievers. Who would you put on this list?

Winnipeg Sun: Jets need to be sellers not buyers at NHL trade deadline. Going to be difficult to sell pieces of this team off if the Jets are in the hunt for the Southeast division title.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline – Jets 3 Panthers 2 in OT. Game recaps, post-game quotes, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

The Telegram: Crunch beat IceCaps in a shootout at Mile One. While the Jets knocked off their parent club (Lightning) last night the IceCaps lost again. This time it was after one player scored in a 10 player shootout.

Swift Current Broncos: Broncos take road victory in Moose Jaw. Adam Lowry continues to tear up the WHL as he scored both goals for Swift Current in their two to one victory last night. Lowry reached the 200 point milestone in the game.

- Mark Scheifele and his Barrie Colts take on the Belleville Bulls tonight at 7:30 at the Barrie Molson Centre. The Colts are three point back of the Bulls for 1st place in the OHL Eastern Conference.

NHL news:

Orange County Register: Ducks sign Getzlaf to eight-year extension. After giving a big contract to captain Ryan Getzlaf they now have to turn their attention to getting Corey Perry signed. Coincidentally he scored his 500th point in a 4-0 victory over the Flames last night.

Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks’ points streak ends at 24 with loss to Avalanche. It was an incredible run to witness. Congrats to the Hawks team for making fans forget the lockout.

Globe and Mail: Enthusiasm powered the 1979-80 Flyers. The 79-80 Flyers record (35 straight) will remain safe as the Hawks streak ended at 30 (dating back to last season). Still an interesting story from Eric Duhatschek.
