He's completely sucked this year. But I think he's perfect for the team, and probably the same caliber of player I'd expect Kekalainen to pick up to improve the team at the deadline.

I hope we put in a claim. Though I doubt he falls to us.
One of the top shootout scorers. He has already been so up and down in his career, but still intriguing. He will add a few points through his shootout prowess alone.

We passed on him once, it was a bad idea then. I was always annoyed we didn't pick him up when we could of. I would claim him in a heart beat. He can play 5 on 5, he's good on the PP, and in the past he was good in the SO.

1 year left on the deal? No biggie.

I admit I don't know what is going on this year, but I'd give him a chance to fix what ails him.

That's where I think it gets sticky. If that is the case, the decision is likely made to try to move him at the deadline and work with him on agreeing to a trade.

By all accounts, Vinny loves Columbus. He could simply say I refuse to accept a trade and will retire at year and to live my days out in Columbus for my family. It's also entirely possible that Vinny says trade me to a contender and I'll see you in July to further take this team North.
I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him getting the Keith Tkachuk treatment where he is traded at the deadline only to sign here again in the offseason

Jokinen is more perimeter guy than Brassard. Soft, not teh win-at-all-costs guy. Don't see him fitting Todd's system well but you never know. He has skill, though.

Wouldn't be surprised if JK claims him.

why would we trade Vinny at the deadline? We're going to need him for the playoffs!

I still hope we target Nino. We could probably get him for a D-man. Maybe Nikitin and a 4th for Nino?

I'd also like Nino, but if you want him you'll have to move something several times more valuable than that. Even with his fallen stock I think he'd still go for a first rounder (though a 20 something pick). Maybe the Isles would do Nino + for Moore. (I'm kind of waiting for Moore-lovers to go off on me, I keep bringing him up in trade discussions.)

I don't see Snow moving a 20 yr old Nino for a pick, that will be 2-4 yrs from contributing. That just pushes Snow's rebuild back further.

Nino is expected to compete with other youngsters in training camp. Snow's telling fans he's sticking with his homegrown rebuild.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey...hing-1.4905549
But the Islanders first will look within to fill the holes on their roster, and next season could bring a bumper crop of prospects into the spotlight.

Lee, 2011 first-rounder Ryan Strome and the two 2010 first-round picks, Nino Niederreiter and Brock Nelson, will get long looks in training camp to find a dynamic second line and a talented young winger to slot in alongside John Tavares.

And that's exactly the way I think it should be done here. The Jackets have been bad for so long that a quick fix is out of the question, just stick with the plan as presented by JD and implemented by JK.

Jokinen cleared waivers.

Really interesting that he cleared, especially given what Murray and Morrow went for just days earlier. Seems to suggest that teams are actively avoiding guys without expiring contracts.

In other words, if you're counting on seeing Umberger in a different uniform next year, you're going to be pretty disappointed.

If the team blows the next 2 games, Letestu is going to go for a 2nd/3rd round pick.

I'm a tiny bit disappointed the Jackets didn't take him.

Lebrun said Jokinen's $3 Million salary next year is what scared teams off.

I kind of expected him to. Rumor was Carolina offered him around for a "come on, anything?" trade and nobody was interested. If teams were interested in Jokinen, they would have offered a late round pick to simply ensure a team in front of them didn't claim him. That's what Howson did with Stralman and Letestu.

I hope this team doesn't take a hardworking group of guys who have a .500 record-- without any scoring support whatsoever-- and trade its heart and soul players. that was exactly what the team was searching for until now. last year was the most boring set of 82 games in human history. just turn it on in the first period to see the two early goals against, then turn it on again in the last five minutes to see the three late goals (against of course).

I think the reason for the inflated offers on guys with expiring contracts is a direct result of the new CBA, and the cap reduction next year. A team like Pittsburgh, with it's core locked up long term (a lot of dollars on a handful of players) knows that this is it's best chance at the Cup for the next handful of years, and thus are willing to spend up to the cap this year, while not having to commit any more for the future. A guy like Prospal's value would be huge. Anisimov - off the charts (I know this post will get me flack!).

One thing to look at though: two teams around is in the standings have already established themselves as sellers. This makes the stretch run for the Jackets entirely possible, with San Jose and Dallas already willing to bow out for future assets.

Another thing is, teams realize that sneaking into that eighth seed might mean all the difference in the world. The LA Kings did it last year, anything is possible.

Or, it could prompt them for one last kick at the can and going "All in", couldn't it?

Dallas' window maybe up, but San Jose's is still open a bit.... Flaming out spectacularly?

This is the interesting dynamic that faces Jarmo/JD, yes?

Craig Button thinks the Jackets will be buyers, he mentioned it on the NHL network yesterday... personally I doubt it.

That's why they get paid the big bucks, and the rest of us just post on a message board.
