Carolina/Calgary

My first ever propsal, so don't kill me.

To Carolina
Mark Giordano stl 1st (21th)

To Calgary
2013 1st (5th)

Carolina gets a solid Dmen on an affordable cap and Calgary gets a top pick to kick starts the rebuild.
Thoughts?

Horrible for Carolina....I know it's your first post but this won't end well.

While it is a huge blow to us it probably isn't that big of an upgrade to Carolina to consider this.

I don't think its that bad, maybe I'm overvaluing Giordano but I would take him over most of Carolina's D

I guess it depends on what you think of Monahan/Lindholm/Barkov.

As a Flames fan I'd do this in a heartbeat. Lindholm and Monohan is just too good to pass up.

However, I don't think Carolina would do this. The Flames would have to add, and it probably wouldn't be worth what they would have to add.

Their D is their biggest problem right now. With 2 staals and possibly skinner at C. Their center position isn't a big problem. I think acquiring a guy like Gio will help them more than someone like monahan will

I would not be completely against it, but this is a very interesting proposal. If this trade happened, then it would very well give the Flames a great start to the rebuild. The only issue is it seems like Giordano is probably going to be our captain and not sure how available he would be. It also makes me wonder if this was to happen, if the Flames would use the Pitts 1st with the 5th or 6th to move up into top 3.

We will most likely take Nichushkin, but we need the cap savings of an ELC.

Skinner was barely used at C also. He has mainly played wing for us.

JR has a cap of 61M.

We are currently at 56M, needing 4 F and 2 D.

No way we will do this. At the season ticket holder meeting Feaster said that they had a vote on who would most likely be our next captain and Gio won heavily. He's not going anywhere.

Plus our defense would be even worse without him. It is still an interesting thought though.

Any potential cap dump that guy can send back to us, if it's one thing we do have, it's cap space

From an outside perspective I think the value is fair.

Just because he is probably the next in line to be the captain dosnt mean he cant be traded. I don't think we will trade Gio but I'm throwing a propsal around. The hole left by Gio if traded can be lessen in FA

Mark Giordano from the sounds of things is our next captain. I doubt he is moved however intriguing this proposal may be from a Flames standpoint.

Thats the other problem.

Ruutu might be considered the only "Cap Dump" guy.

But if he comes back from 2nd hip surgery this year 100%, then we would rather keep him I think.

Really the only option the Canes have for improving the D is to trade one of our top 6 minus Tlusty.

Tlusty has a small cap hit compared to the rest:

Jiri Tlusty ($1.600m) / Eric Staal ($8.250m) / Alexander Semin ($7.000m)
Jeff Skinner ($5.725m) / Jordan Staal ($6.000m) / Tuomo Ruutu ($4.750m)

Of the Defense, if we move 1, that is just 1 more to replace there.

My thoughts are to trade Skinner or Ruutu for a top 4 D with a comparable cap hit and use the top 5 pick to replace either one.

If we dump McBain, that will clear up another 1.9M, but make another spot to replace.

Not terrible value, but definitely in the Flames' favor.

What about adding a conditional pick going to Carolina that is production based? Would that easy the concerns of the healthy Ruutu being just given away?

neither side should do this. Giordano may be a huge part for the Flames going forward.

a bigger piece of the future than the Flames getting 2 picks in the top 6? that's unlikely.

for the 'Canes it depends if they want to win now.

Going forward would give us Barkov & Monahan, solidifying our top 2 centres for a very long time. Even though losing Gio would suck, I would still make this trade from the Flames POV.

If you want to move up into top 5, you need to give up first pick.
